Kayak lesson and training

 

EN: Today I trained Cho with the basics of seakayaking (enter, exit the kayak, low brace, use of torso to paddle, turn while paddling). I am happy he likes kayaking and he seems comfortable on the water. The cold temperature with the sun makes it very nice to paddle without much sweat. Tomorrow it's our last day of preparation. We have to buy extra warm clothes, more food, charge batteries, sent press releases. This afternoon Edgar came with a local guide to visit us. He told us where to be careful of the drug dealers. The entire afternoon I had a massive headache. Captain Giselle of the Yavari told me it was perhaps a late effect of the altitude. We hope to have internet after 3-4 days of expedition. Stay tuned.

La temperatura fría con el sol hace que sea muy agradable para remar sin mucho sudor. Mañana es el último día de preparación. Tenemos que comprar ropa cálidos, más alimentos, cargue las baterías, enviado comunicados de prensa. Esta tarde Edgar llegó con un guía local. Él nos dijo que tener cuidado con los traficantes de drogas. Toda la tarde tuve un dolor de cabeza enorme. Capitán Giselle del Yavarí me dijo que era tal vez un efecto tardío de la altitud. Good News from Puno

EN: Gadiel and I left Lima on Saturday evening to Arequipa, the second largest city in Peru. We had a few hours to visit the town and took another bus to Puno and arrived yesterday by midday. We are currently staying (thanks to the South American Explorers) on the YAVARI boat. We met with Edgar from Edgar Adventures who is renting us free kayaks and equipment for the expedition. Today we processed emails, met with Christian Nonis, a Belgian who lives near the lake for 30 years and discussed with Víctor Hugo Apaza Vargas, the chief of the Titicaca National Reserve. We concluded that going into the reserve with the kayaks was not practical and would damage more the breeding and fragile areas. So we will only enter the reserve at the end of the circumnavigation of Lake Titicaca under the guidance of Victor, a privilege he is giving us to document that fragile area. At 5pm we received the kayaks and I took a 15 min warm-up and feel already happy in my kayak.

ES: Gadiel y yo salimos de Lima el sábado por la noche a Arequipa, la segunda ciudad más grande de Perú. Tuvimos poco horas para visitar la ciudad y tomamos otro bus para Puno y llegó ayer al mediodía. Nos estamos hospedando (gracias a South American Explorers) en el barco Yavarí. Nos reunimos con Edgar de Edgar Adventures que nos está alquilando kayaks y equipos gratis para la expedición. Hoy procesamos correos electrónicos, encontramos a Christian Nonis, un belga que vive cerca del lago desde hace 30 años y hablamos con Víctor Hugo Apaza Vargas, jefe de la Reserva Nacional del Titicaca. Llegamos a la conclusión de que entrar en la reserva con los kayaks no era práctico y dañaría más la cría y zonas frágiles. Tan solo nos adentraremos en el parque al final de la circunnavegación del lago Titicaca con Víctor, un privilegio que el nos da para documentar esa zona frágil. A las 5 pm recibimos los kayaks y yo tomé un 15 minutos de entrenamiento y estoy feliz en mi kayak.

The important is the tour, not the distance but I guess we'll do 1100km.

EN: I spent the past 2 weeks hunting for sponsors and talking to people about the expedition. Everyone likes the idea so it gives me encouragements. We've already a few sponsors and the coming week I'll end the search and finalize the preparations then leave with Gadiel to Puno.

Today I've been searching some timing/geographic/energy information.

We roughly nee 400 Cal per hour of paddling and I have no idea of the influence of the cold and the 3810m of altitude. So if we paddle 10 hours per day + rest of the 14h of the day's energy needs, we need between 4000 and 5000 Cal per person per day.

Average Sunrise/Sunset for Aug-Sept 2013 : 6h45 - 18h30 (11h45h of day) 

Moon: full on 20 AUG @ 21h45 and 19 SEPT @ 7h13 (La Paz)

Temperature average: High 17C (max 21C), Low -3C (Min -8C).

Daily distance: I expect an average of 3km/h so 10h will get us to do 30km per day so that's about 5,5 weeks for 1100km without any problems or day of rest. Hopefully we'll do an average of 5km/h when paddling and the rest of the time will be filming, taking GPS points and photos, performing the science program.

FR: J'ai passé les 2 semaines dernières à chasser des sponsors et parler de l'expédition à toutes les personnes que je rencontre. Tous le monde adhère au projet, c'est encourageant. On a déjà quelques sponsors et je continuerai encore la semain qui arrive et finaliserai les préparatifs. Ensuite je quitterai Lima pour Puno avec Gadiel.

Aujourd'hui, j'ai cherché de l'info sur la météo/info astrologique et énergie.

On aurait besoin de 400 Calorlies par heure de kayak et je n'ai aucune idée de l'influence du facteur froid et altitude à 3810m. Donc si on pagaie 10 heures par jour + un besoin en énergie pour les autres 14h d'un jour, nous avons besoin de 4000 à 5000 Cal par personne et par jour.

Je vise une moyenne de 5km/h lors de la progression pure et le reste du temps sera consacré à filmer, prendre des points GPS et photos et travailler aux projets scientifiques.

Kayak Titicaca lake introduced to Lima

EN: In Lima, I gave a talk at the Colegio de Ingenieros de Peru tonight. I spoke about my previous expeditions, then introduced the TitiKayak expedition (first circumnavigation of lake Titicaca by kayak) with Peruvian adventurer Cho (known for Walking the Amazon for 2 years with Ed Stafford). Gary Catterall (UK), a volunteer of the South American Explorers club is helping us preparing the expedition.

FR: Ce soir j'ai donné une conférence à Lima à l'école d'ingénieurs du Pérou. J'ai parlé des mes expéditions précédentes et ensuit j'ai introduit l'expédition TitiKayak (premier tour complet du lac Titicaca en kayak) que je tenterai le mois prochain avec l'aventurier Péruvien Cho (connu pour avoir marché le long du fleuve Amazone pendant 2 ans avec Ed Stafford). Gadiel Sanchez Rivera and TitiKayak

EN: Back in Lima, I met again with adventurer and jungle trek explorer Gadiel Sanchez Rivera (aka Cho) who just finished guiding a client for 3 weeks in the jungle. Easy task as he spent more than 2 years (with Ed Stafford) in the jungle while walking the Amazon, expedition that ended on the 9th of August 2010.

This sunday, it was Belgian national day and we have a new King. I celebrated the event at the embassy of Belgium in Peru. I met several interesting people, full of experiences of Peru, such as Guy Vanackeren, founder of the travel agency Aventura Latino America and manager of the Belgo-Club Peru.

FR: De retour à Lima, je retrouve l'aventurier et expert de la jungle Gadiel Sanchez Rivera (surnommé Cho) qui terminait de guider un client pendant 3 semaines dans la jungle. Tâche facile puisqu'il a passé plus de 2 années (avec Ed Stafford) dans la jungle lors de l'expédition Walking the Amazon, qui s'est terminée le 9 août 2010. Ce dimanche, jour de fête nationale et couronnement du nouveau roi, je célébrais cette événement à l'ambassade de Belgique au Pérou. J'y ai rencontré des personnes intéressantes, pleines d'expériences au Pérou, comme Guy Vanackeren, fondateur de l'agence Aventura Latino America et gérant Belgo-Club Pérou.

Cusco and Macchu Picchu

EN: After Lima, I went traveling and trekking. To Ica and the oasis and sanddunes of Huacachina, a flight over the Nazca lines and Cusco. From cusco, I took a bus to the village of Cachora and started trekking to the archeoligical sites of Choquequirao and then continued trekking to Macchu Picchu via the end of the Salkantay trek. One week of good weather with highlights like pitching my tent amongst silver miners who dynamite the mountain or waking up on a side of a mountain with Macchu Picchu on the other side. This week I work on the TitiKayak expedition and prepare also a trip to perhaps visit one or more of the sources of the Amazon river. I also give a talk in Cusco on 16/7 and 23/7 in Lima.

FR: Après Lima, je suis parti voyager et faire un long trek. Vers Ica et l'oasis de Huacachina dans les dunes, un vol au dessus des lignes de Nazca et la visite de Cusco. De Cusco, j'ai pris un bus vers Cachora et entamé le trek vers les sites archéologiques de Choquequirao et puis le Macchu Picchu la fin du trek Salkantay. Une semaine de beau temps avec des points forts comme planter ma tente chez des mineurs d'argent dynamitant la montagne ou se réveiller sur un flanc de montagne avec le Macchu Picchu en face. Cette semaine je travaille sur l'expédition TitiKayak et je prépare une excursion pour aller visiter une ou plusieurs sources du fleuve Amazone. Je donne aussi une conférence le 16/7 à Cusco et le 23/7 à Lima.

Lima

EN: I have been almost for a week in Lima, preparing the next expedition and several other places I wan to travel to in Peru. The weather is very cold and grey in the winter but yesterday and today it was warmer and sunny so I finally went to visit the city, which is enormous. Lima metropole is 9 million inhabitants. I visited Barranco and the center. I live in Miraflores. This time I had my camera when I saw the Google Maps car.

FR: A Lima depuis presque une semaine, je prépare la prochaine expédition ainsi que les autres endroits que je veux visiter au Pérou. Le temps est maussade l'hiver mais hier et aujourd'hui il a fait beau et chaud. J'ai visité le centre, le quartier de Barranco mais je loge à Miraflores. Et cette fois-ci j'avais mon appareil photo lorsque j'ai vu la Google Maps car. Lima métrople c'st 9 millions d'habitants.

Peru north of Lima

EN: I rushed across Northern Peru to Lima. I stopped at various archaeological sites in Trujillo and Chiclayo. Among others: Sipan, Campina de Moche, Museo Huacas de Moche, Huaca del sol, Huaca de la luna, Huaca Arco Iris, Museo de Sitio, Chan Chan, Palacio Tshudi and the beach of Huanchaco with its reed surfboards named Caballitos de Totora.

FR: J'ai tracé à travers le nord du Pérou jusqu'à Lima. Je me suis arrêté pour voir différents site archéologiques à Chiclayo et Trujillo. Parmis d'autre: Sipan, Campina de Moche, Museo Huacas de Moche, Huaca del sol, Huaca de la luna, Huaca Arco Iris, Museo de Sitio, Chan Chan, Palacio Tshudi et la plage de Huanchaco avec ses "planches" de surf en roseaux nommés Caballitos de Totora.

Last week in Ecuador

 
 

EN: I took a few days in Montañita, a party and surfer beach town on the Pacific but I only stayed 2 days as the weather was bad. I headed to Guayaquil (2 photos below) and I was surprised by the Malecon promenade, which is clean and superb. The Simon Bolivar parc was great with Iguanas walking freely among humans, squirrels and cats. The best part of the week was spending sunny days in beautiful Cuenca just at the moment of the music fiesta weekend. I did a day tour of the Ingapirka archaeological site. Saturday evening I took a long bus to Peru.

FR: J'ai été à Montañita, la petite ville côtière faite pour la fête et les surfeurs. Le temps était très mauvais donc je ne suis resté que 2 jours pour me diriger vers Guayaquil (2 photos du bas). J'ai été agréablement surpris par cette ville et surtour sa promenade Malecon. Le parc Simon Bolivar est très agréable avec ses iguanes, écureuils et chats qui se balladent sans crainte des humains. Le meilleur de la semaine fût à Cuenca en pleine fête de la musique sous le soleil. De là j'ai fait un tour d'un jour au site archéologique d'Ingapirka. Samedi j'ai pris un long bus vers le Pérou.

Cotopaxi and Chimborazo

EN: I finished this week the first part of the planned expeditions in South America. I went to Cotopaxi on 8 June and made an attempt the next morning on 9 June. I failed. The entire weekend was cold, windy and with precipitations: everything got covered in ice within a few hours. I was with a guide and a 62 year old Japanese (who had been on Aconcagua 30 years ago) but despite his training, he felt tired at 5200m and we ALL had to turn back. I was disappointed but it's part of the game. No one made it to the summit that morning. One group with a guide named Milton used a lot of energy and went to 5700m. Two groups didn't even bother leave the hut with these conditions.

I liked the fact Milton pushed hard with his 2 clients and so I hired him to climb Chimborazo (photo with sunlight). We went to the 5000m refuge and slept only 4 hours and left at 00.30am. At 5500m we crossed the other teams who were going back due to high winds. At 4 am, we reached 5924m and we decided not to go for the summit although the weather was not so cold with no precipitations. I was feeling very tired, no problem with the head/altitude but just felt I had not enough energy for the summit and go back down safely. My mind and body would have made the summit by 7 am or so, in normal times but my body would have collapsed going down putting the life of Milton and me in a death or helicopter rescue situation. It will be for another year. I'm happy of the experience, the decision and to beat my record altitude. Also I heard the success rate of Chimborazo is below 20%. On Everest we are above 30% and perhaps around 50% in the past 10 years. It's my last week in Quito, I will travel south and hope to be in Peru by 21 of June.

FR: J'ai terminé cette semaine la première partie des expéditions planifiées en Amérique du sud. Je suis arrivé au refuge du Cotopaxi le 8 Juin et fait une tentative le 9 Juin. Je n'ai pas réussi. Toute le weekend il a fait froid, venteux et avec des précipitations: tout se recouvrait de glace en quelques heures. J'étais avec un guide et un Japonais de 62 ans (qui avait fait l'Aconcagua il y a 30 ans) mais malgré son entraînement, il se sentait trop fatigué et à 5200m nous avons tous fait demi-tour. J'étais déçu mais cela fait parti du jeu. Personne n'a atteinte le sommet ce jour là. Un groupe guidé par Milton était épuisé mais à réussi à atteindre 5700m. Deux groupes ont décidé de rester au refuge et de ne rien tenter vu les conditions mauvaises.

J'ai apprécié que le guide Milton pousse bien haut avec ces 2 clients et donc je l'ai engagé pour gravir le Chimborazo (photo à la tombée du jour avec belle lumière). Nous sommes arrivés au refuge à 5000m et n'avons dormis que 4 heures et nous sommes partis à minuit trente. Vers 5500m nous avons croisé les autres équipes qui faisaient demi-tour vu la force du vent. Vers 4h, nous atteignions 5924m et décidions d'abandonner le sommet bien qu'il ne faisaient pas si froid et qu'il faisait sec. J''étais épuisé, pas de mal de tête dû à l'altitude mais je sentais mes forces partir et je savais qu'il était possible d'atteindre le sommet mentalement et physiquement, mais je n'aurais jamais eu assez de forces pour redescendre et j'aurais mis la vie de Milton et moi-même en danger de mort ou nous aurions eu besoin d'un hélicoptère pour nous sauver. Ce sera donc pour une autre année. Je suis satisfait de l'expérience, de la décision et d'avoir battu mon record d'altitude. J'ai entendu que le taux de succès du Chimborazo est au dessous des 20%. Sur l'Everest on est au dessus de 30% et peut-être 50% sur la dernière décade. C'est ma dernière semaine à Quito, je vais voyager vers le sud et probablement arriver au Pérou autour du 21 Juin.
