My 20th expedition - Back to the Simpson Desert

EN: In 2008, I did my 4th expedition in Australia and actually my first 4 expeditions were in Australia. It was also the expedition that required the most preparation (permits, logistics, build a desert cart). And this while having a full time job and learning Russian during evenenings classes.

So I went, not knowing much about the Simpson Desert (who does really?) and I made history . To me a class 5 expedition. I made (with help) and a used desert cart as seen below. I said never again.

And in 2016 I went back to the Simpson Desert without a cart, so only with a backpack and I failed to reach Birdsville unsupported but made it to Poeppel Corner, a pointed I wanted to pass in 2008.

It's again 8 years later. It's also 20 years since the first time I visited Australia. So I decided to do a long and hard expedition for this anniversary. I'm going again: longer and harder. 

Also with more equipment to document better. There are also scientific projects.

The desert cart as you can see has new tyres and is on its way to Australia. I arrived in Sydney yesterday.

FR : En 2008, j'ai effectué ma quatrième expédition en Australie et, en fait, mes quatre premières expéditions ont eu lieu en Australie. C'est aussi l'expédition qui a nécessité le plus de préparation (permis, logistique, construction d'une charrette pour le désert). Et cela tout en ayant un travail à plein temps et en apprenant le russe pendant les cours du soir.

J'y suis donc allé, sans trop connaître le désert de Simpson (qui le connaît vraiment ?) et je suis entré dans l'histoire. Pour moi, une expédition de classe 5. J'ai fabriqué (avec de l'aide) une charrette d'occasion pour le désert, comme on peut le voir ci-dessous. J'ai décidé de ne plus jamais recommencer.

Et en 2016, je suis retourné dans le désert de Simpson sans chariot, donc seulement avec un sac à dos et je n'ai pas réussi à atteindre Birdsville sans soutien mais j'ai réussi à atteindre Poeppel Corner, un point que je voulais passer en 2008.

C'est à nouveau le cas 8 ans plus tard. Cela fait également 20 ans que j'ai visité l'Australie pour la première fois. J'ai donc décidé de faire une expédition longue et difficile pour cet anniversaire. J'y retourne : plus longtemps, plus durement et avec plus d'équipement pour mieux documenter. Il y a aussi des projets scientifiques.

Le chariot du désert, comme vous pouvez le voir, a de nouveaux pneus et est en route pour l'Australie. Je suis arrivé à Sydney hier.

To the Antarctic - Belgica's polar pioneers

 

EN: I visited the superb exhibition about the Belgian expedition to Antarctica on the La Belgica ship. It's to be visiter in Antwerp at the MAS museum until November. Consider you need 2 hours to visit it because there is a lot to read and videos to watch. Hundreds of photos and artifacts are showcased.

Did you know Roald Amundsen and Frederick Cook were on board ? But the leader was Adrien de Gerlache. The ship got stuck in the ice and they made the first overwintering in Antarctica. The entire crew is legendary.  A lot of science and discovery were made.

EN : J'ai visité la superbe exposition sur l'expédition belge en Antarctique à bord du navire La Belgica. Elle est à visiter à Anvers au musée MAS jusqu'en novembre. Il faut compter deux heures pour la visiter, car il y a beaucoup de choses à lire et de vidéos à regarder. Des centaines de photos et d'objets sont exposés.

Saviez-vous que Roald Amundsen et Frederick Cook étaient à bord ? Mais le chef de file était Adrien de Gerlache. Le navire est resté bloqué dans la glace et ils ont effectué le premier hivernage en Antarctique. Tout l'équipage est légendaire.  Beaucoup de sciences et de découvertes ont été faites.

Belgian Antarctic Expedition with the Belgica

  

EN: 125 years ago, a (the first) belgian scientific expedition made the first overwintering in Antarctica. Led by Adrien De Gerlache on the Belgica ship the international team was thought lost and they all came back as heroes in Antwerp. The exhibition lists the team and showcases items from the expedition. Other 2 young explorers on board who later became famous were Frederick Cook and Roald Amundsen.

FR: Il y a 125 ans, une (première) expédition scientifique belge a effectué le premier hivernage en Antarctique. Dirigée par Adrien De Gerlache sur le Belgica, l'équipe internationale était considérée comme perdue, mais elle est revenue en héros à Anvers. L'exposition dresse la liste de l'équipe et présente des objets de l'expédition. Les deux autres jeunes explorateurs à bord qui sont devenus célèbres plus tard sont Frederick Cook et Roald Amundsen.

 

Conférence Stéphane Dugast - L'astrolabe

EN: I attended the conference of French author Stéphane Dugast at TERDAV (adventure travel agency). He presented his book at the famous french Antarctic ship: L'Astrolabe.

Dixie in Living Tomorrow

EN:I went to Living Tomorrow to a talk and presentation of the new book "Surpassing Sastrugi" of Dixie Dansercoer written by his wife for the 20 years he's been doing expeditions.

New Belgica second visit

EN: Over 2 years ago I visited the start of the building of the LA BELGICA replica names New Belgica. There is progress and it's hard to estimate when the ship will be completed. Several photos from the expeditions were added and you can see them in my New Belgica Album.

FR: Il y a plus de 2 ans, je visitais le début du chantier de LA BELGICA, enfin de sa réplique New Belgica.Il y a du progrès et c'est difficile de savoir lorsque le navire sera achevé. EN: I've met Eddy Stuer, leading the project to build a replica of the famous La Belgica, which was the boat led by Belgian explorer Adrien de Gerlache and made the first overwintering in Antarctica. Several other crew members included famous Roald Amundsen and Frederick Cook.

The building of the replica the New Belgica is located near Antwerp, which is a social project providing traineeship and motivating work for unemployed people. Currently it is expected that the boat will be completed by 2017 with a sailing tour. I will follow the building several times per year and will post photos in the New Belgica photo album.

FR: J'ai rencontré Eddy Stuer, qui mène le projet de la construction d'une réplique du célèbre La Belgica, navire commandé par Adrien de Gerlache et qui a réalisé le premier hivernage en Antarctique. Plusieurs membres de l'équipage incluaient Roald Amundsen et Frederick Cook.
La construction de la réplique Le New Belgica se situe près d'Anvers. Le projet est social car il donne une formation et une motivation à un groupe de personnes sans emploi. Pour l'instant la fin du chantier est estimée en 2017 et sera suivie d'un tour à la voile. Je vais suivre plusieurs fois par an la progression du chantier et je mettrai les photos dans l'album photo New Belgica.

Belgium IPY Symposium

ENG: I attended this 1-day conference at the Palace of the Academies. I listened to all scientists showing the contribution of the Belgian research to the achievements of the International Polar Year 2007-2009. It was interesting but complicated (very specific and detailed domains) to understand except for the slideshow of Alain Hubert about the construction of the Princess Elisabeth Antarctic station.

FRA: J'ai suivi cette conférence d'une journée au Palais des Académies. J'ai écouté tous les scientifiques qui ont montré la contribution de la recherche Belge et les résultats obtenus lors de l'année Polaire Internationale 2007-2009. Ce fût intéressant mais compliqué a comprendre (domaines précis et détaillés) sauf pour les diaspos d'Alain Hubert sur la construction de la station Belge Princesse Elisabeth.

Princess Elisabeth Antarctic Station

ENG: Today I went to the press conference and the opening of the new Belgian polar station. Prince Philip of Belgium, explorer Alain Hubert and politicians, all were attending. A few months ago I met the design engineer Johan Berte, because I wanted to be part of the adventure to built it in Antartica. I spoke also to a few glaciologist from the University of Brussels, Frank Pattyn and Denis Samyn.
Belgian glaciologist are well known for their expertise and works around the planet regarding the measure/modeling of the evolution of the iceshelf and glaciers.

FRA: Aujourd'hui j'ai assisté à la conférence de presse sur l'ouverture de la nouvelle station polqire Belge. Le prince Philippe, l'explorateur Alain Hubert et les politiciens étaient présents. Il y a quelques mois, j'avais rencontré Johan Berte, le concepteur principal de la station car je voulais faire parti de cette aventure de construction de station en Antarctique. J'ai également discuté avec quelques glaciolgues Belges de l'ULB, Frank Pattyn and Denis Samyn.
Les travaux de ces scientifiques sont reconnus pour leur expertise dans la mesure et modélisation de l'évolution de la calotte glacière.
