Film Le VIVANT qui se défend

FR: J'ai été voir le flim Le Vivant qui se défend de Vincent Verzat. Ce film mélange nature animalière locale et le suivi de Vincent de certaines luttes écologiques en France. Le film sera mis gratuitement sur sa chaîne YouTube en Novembre. En attendant vous pouvez aller le voir en salle à ces dates.

EN: I went to see Vincent Verzat's film Le Vivant qui se défend (The Living Defends Itself). This film combines local wildlife with Vincent's coverage of certain environmental struggles in France. The film will be available for free on his YouTube channel in November. In the meantime, you can go and see it at the cinema on these dates.

FR: Après le Climate Sense à Lille, j'ai foncé pour prendre le train et assister au lancement du Women Wave Project de ces 6 activistes féminines. Elle vont défendre un projet bien costaud à la COP30 au Brésil. Elle (6) s'y rendent à la voile avec (4) skippeuses: uné équipe 100% femmes. Trajet Cherbourg-Canaries-Belem. Voilier: Magic Time.

EN: After Climate Sense in Lille, I rushed to catch the train and attend the launch of the Women Wave Project by these six female activists. They will be championing a powerful project at COP30 in Brazil. The six of them will be sailing there with four skippers: a 100% female team. The route will take them from Cherbourg to the Canary Islands to Belém. Sailboat: Magic Time.

What are their objectives there?

1. To meet and collaborate with local activists and those who will have joined the COP.
2. To attend the People's Summit.
3. Actions/conference on site (Ocean, Intersectionality)
4. Advocacy at COP30: Finance, Agenda, Governance.

Climate Sense Life at 50 degrees

  

FR: J'ai testé l'expérience Climate Sense: on reste 30 minutes dans ce camion chauffé à 30°C et on y faire de l'exercice physique et mental comme si on était en 2050 lors d'une journée d'été suffocante. Est-il possible de travailler, de réfléchir dans ces conditions ? Pas vraiment.

EN: I tried out the Climate Sense: experience: you spend 30 minutes in a truck heated to 30°C, doing physical and mental exercises as if you were in 2050 on a sweltering summer's day. Is it possible to work and think in these conditions? Not really.

I filmed an episode of LouPhiTEST there: I tested a summer day in 2050 (not yet edited, published I hope in October).

Test of the FRIKAR

EN: I tested the FRIKAR by PODBIKE just outside Brussels. This bike is powered by electricity but there is no direct transmission between the pedals and the engine. This is the video of my test on my YouTube for my show "LouPhi Test".

Jane Goodall in Brussels

 

ENG: I first attended a public lecture of Jane Goodall organized by the Jane Goodall Institute Belgium in May 2011. I knew about her since joining The Explorers Club in 2010. I was made ambassador in 2011 and organized the first Roots and Shoots cleanup activities in April 2012 with dropouts teenagers. The event was then sponsored by my employer ALTRAN. I've met Jane Goodall many times in the past 11 years. Last time was in 2017. I was at the (ECAD) Explorers Club Annual Dinner in 2019 and then in 2020 I was supposed to see her in Brussels and NYC but the Pandemic hit. This weekend she did an another amazing lecture and I inspired also those coming to her gala.

FRA: J'ai assisté pour la première fois à une conférence publique de Jane Goodall organisée par l'Institut Jane Goodall Belgique en mai 2011. Je connaissais son existence depuis que j'ai rejoint l'Explorers Club en 2010. J'ai été nommée ambassadeur en 2011 et j'ai organisé les premières activités de nettoyage Roots and Shoots en avril 2012 avec des adolescents en décrochage scolaire. L'événement était alors sponsorisé par mon employeur ALTRAN. J'ai rencontré Jane Goodall à plusieurs reprises au cours des 11 dernières années. La dernière fois, c'était en 2017. J'ai assisté au dîner annuel de l'Explorers Club (ECAD) en 2019, puis en 2020, je devais la voir à Bruxelles et à New York, mais la pandémie a frappé. KayaClean CSR Corporate Community day

EN: The Jane Goodall Institute Belgium organized another KayaClean (part of the Roots and Shoots program) action with a corporate company. I was present to lead and explain how the action started, why it was important and safety guidelines. The sun was present and participants did an excellent job, a real clean-up army! They clearly experienced the fact that removing trash out of the water isn't an easy task and that we only see the tip of the iceberg when paddling a river like the Lesse. It's when you approach the bank river and look closely that you find all the small trash lying in the mud or in shallow water. Trash is even found hanging in the trees. 

FR: Le Jane Goodall Institute Belgique a organisé une autre action KayaClean  (fait partie du prgramme Roots and Shoots) avec une société. J'étais présent pour mener, expliquer la génèse de l'action, pourquoi c'est important et des règles de sécurité. Le soleil était au rendez-vous et les participants ont fait un excellent travail, une vraie armée de nettoyeurs! Ils ont pu clairement expérimenter le fait que retirer des déchets de l'eau n'est pas une opération facile et quo'n ne voit que le sommet de l'iceberg lorsqu'on pagaie une rivière comme la Lesse. C'est en approchant les berges et en regardant attentivement qu'on trouve les petits déchets cachés dans la boue ou en eau peu profonde. On trouve même des déchets accrochés en haut de branches.

Isabelle Austissier

EN: I'm back from Liège where I listened to navigator Isabelle Autissier who in 75 minutes highlighted the issues facing the Oceans. She spoke about water pollution, ocean temperature raise, marine biodiversity issues ... and of course that there is hope. I liked the end of her talk. She said that as a sailor in the storm you can be pessimistic about it and do nothing, optimistic about it and do nothing or realistic and change direction. It's indeed what humanity must do.

FR: Je reviens de Liège où j'ai écouté la navigatrice Isabelle Autissier qui pendant 75 minutes à mis l'accent sur la problématique des Océans. Elle a parlé de pollution des eaux, d'augmentation de la température mondiale des Océans, des dangers pesant sur la biodiversité marine... et évidemment du fait qu'il reste de l'espoir. J'ai aimé la fin de son discours où elle a dit que comme un marin en pleine tempête, on peut être pessimiste et ne rien faire, optimiste et ne rien faire ou être réaliste et changer de cap. C'est évidemment ce que l'humanité doit faire.

CSR workshop at the JCI World Congress Leipzig

EN: I did a 90 minutes workshop in Leipzig at the Junior Chamber International World Congress. I highlighted the sustainability and CSR lessons I have learnt on the field in expeditions. Mainly tackling water pollution issues. Participants received a few cases and have to give ideas on how to make their project more sustainable.

FR: J'ai donné un workshop de 90 minutes à Leipzig lors du congrès mondial de la Junior Chamber International (Jeune Chambre Internationale / Economique) J'ai souligné ce que j'ai appris en terme de durabilité lors de mes expéditions. Principalement sur le thème de l'eau de de la pollution. Les participants ont reçu un cas a discuter, émettre des idées pour rendre les projets plus durables.

Solar powered sailboat Aero-48

EN: I visited Aerofleet at the France-Belgium border in Givet to see the nearly finished AERO-48 (video) sailing catamaran with electrical engines powered solely by solar panels. Mr Raphael Van Vlodorp’s company build custom made boats and other large things made of carbon fiber. The normal carbon fiber catamaran is about 15 meters for 5 ton and the version with solar panels, 2 ton batteries and electrical engines is at only 8 tons. The Swiss client should start a round the world trip in March 2015.

FR: J’ai visité Aerofleet à Givet à la frontière France-Belgique pour voir la quasi fin de la construction du voilier catamaran AERO-48 qui est équipé de moteurs électriques et panneaux solaires. L’entreprise de Mr Raphael Van Vlodorp développe des bateaux et autres pieces en carbone. Leur catamaran en carbone pèse seulement 5 tonnes et la version avec panneaux solaire, batteries (2 tonnes) et moteurs électriques pèse à peine 8 tonnes. Le client Suisse devrait entâmer un tour du monde à la voile dès Mars 2015.

EN: I went North of Amsterdam to the Arjan Bloem kayak shop. They nearly store 2000 kayaks so there was a lot to see. I bought a second hand river wild water kayak. I tested it back in Brussels in the canals and took the opportunity to do 1km of clean up. I collected all kind of trash but mainly plastic bottles and tetrapacks.

FR: J'ai été au Nord d'Amsterdam chez Arjan Bloem. Ils stockent pas loin de 2000 kayaks et il y a beaucoup à voir. J'ai acheté un kayak d'eau vive de seconde main. Je l'ai testé à Bruxelles dans le canal et j'ai nettoyé 1km de berge. J'ai amassé de tout mais surtout des bouteilles en plastique et des tétrapacks.

Knighted by Jane Goodall

EN: I've been an ambassador for the Jane Goodall Institute Belgium and its Roots and Shoots program since 2011. Today at the European parliament Jane knighted me Jane Goodall Institute knight for the Youth, the animals and the plants in the order of the Iguana. She then called me Sir Iguana. I also did a tiny conference about my expeditions to the audience of 300 pupils, teenagers and teachers from all over Belgium.

FR: Je suis ambassadeur du Jane Goodall Institute Belgique et le programme Roots and Shoots depuis 2011. Aujourd'hui au parlement Européen, Jane m'a fait chevalier de son institut pour la jeunesse, les animaux et les plantes de l'ordre de l'Iguane. Elle m'a ensuite appelé Sir Iguana. J'ai aussi fait une mini conférence sur mes expéditions à l'assemblée composé d'élèves, ados et enseignants provenant des quatre coins de la Belgique.

CapExpe grants

EN: Last year, in between the Clipperton expedition (the documentary is scheduled on 6 June on Thalassa, France3) Guillaume Bruyr contacted me to have some tips. I couldn't help him much because I had no experience on his road from Belgium to Kazakhstan. I met him at Capexpe the organisation helping low budget expeditions to realize outdoor adventures. Six projects were presented during the evening and the crowd could vote for 3 that got a grant of around 500 EUR.

FR: L'année dernière, entre l'expédition Clipperton (docu prévu le 6 juin sur Thalassa, France3) Guillaume Bruyr me contacte pour avoir des tuyaux. Je ne peux pas beaucoup l'aider car je n'ai aps d'expérience sur sa route de la Belgique vers le Kazakhstan. Je l'ai rencontré au CapExpe, l'organisation qui soutient les projets aventureux à faible budget. Six projets ont été présentés au public qui a voté pour 3 projets qui ont reçu une bourse d'environ 500 Eur.

EN: I'm in France at Boulogne sur mer. I'm attending an evening and talk given by Gerard D'Aboville. I also saw already the PlanetSolar boat and tomorrow I will visit it.

Rio Marañon Rafting and Kayaking

EN: I'm just back from a 1 week trip rafting and river kayaking down the upper part of the Marañon river. The trip if the first ever guided trip on the river, done by SierraRios led by Rocky Contos. Seeing the beauty of the "Grand Canyon of the Andes" was amazing. I also found myself between a rock and a hard place after a wrong decision I took and was saved from drowning in the rapids. The expedition also focus on telling the local people about the project to dam the river with up to 20 dams. This would bring a lot of electrical power to Peru to be sold to Chile and Brasil mainly but according to specialists, the study didn't involve the local population and study much of the negative ecological impacts. FR: Je suis revenu d'une semaine de rafting et de kayak de rivière sur le fleuve Marañon. C'est la première descente guidée de cette rivière réalisée par SierraRios menée par Rocky Contos. Voir la beauté du "Grand Canyon des Andes" était superbe. J'ai appris beaucoup et surtour lorsque j'ai commis une erreur et j'ai été sauvé de la noyade dans les rapides. L'expédition vise aussi à expliquer à la population locale le projet de construction de barrages (jusqu'à 20), ce qui donnerait beaucoup d'éléecticité au Pérou à revendre au Chili et au Brésil. Mais selon les ONG, l'étude du projet n'a pas tenu compte des populations et de tous les impacts environnementaux négatifs.Plus sur l'expédition est ici et pour en apprendre plus et comment sauver le Rio Marañon ici. Pour le moment je suis à Lima, malade mais je vais mieux.

Sep26: Everyone is in Lima; rendezvous in Miraflores at Friend's House and Chris Meyer's house.

Sep27: Depart Lima; large bus for everyone plus smaller combi "Sprinter" for the gear.  We get out by 9 am and are in Chavin after dusk (7 pm). We had to get an additional pickup to lighten the load on the dirt roads near Chavin. Hotel paid for in Chavin for everyone.

Sep28 (Day1) 0 km. Leave Chavin at 7:30 am; ruins not open until 9am, so we miss them. We arrive to river a little after noon - gated access to put-in now so I pay the owners for it now and will do so in the future. Rigging most of afternoon. River is low - about 50 cms/1600 cfs.  About 6 kayakers go up and run the 6 km class III-IV section from P.Copuma to put-in point.  We camp at put-in.  Pasta dinner.

Sep29 (Day2) 25 km; class III-IV.  Finish rigging. Leave a few items at casa nearby. Enga and others give safety talk. At first class III Neil gets heavy cataraft stuck on a rock, but soon wiggles off.  All seems to go well otherwise here and in Jata (first IV) which several folks elect not to row (Julio and I row several rafts through). Yesojirca Narrows are easily passed with kayaks off the rafts.  We camp a little ways down on RL.  Camp km 25 RL. Steak/salmon dinner.

Sep30 (Day3) 33 km; class III-IV.  Some III in morning. Hike Q. Huanapampa to nice narrows and little falls/climbs. Bruce got ahead and misses lunch there. Pass Rio Yanamayo - two channels a bit of branches to avoid.  Pauca is more like a IV according to some. We scout Pachachin (III-IV) high on RL which reveals easier raft route in RR channel.  Camp km 58 RR. Kebab dinner.

Oct1 (Day4) 29 km; class III-IV. Several folks feeling GI problems (Suzy, Steve, Bruce are bad - two take cipro; John, Glenn, Joe not good).  Q. Sachachin hike in morning across river - very nice milky white water and walk under boulders to falls.  Good class III section to start - some II-III after. Meet guy on side who gives us bananas just upstream of our lunch spot. Lou-Phi kayaks but flips in a III and gets banged up on swim. Late in day we all go into Shapalmonte (IV) without side scouting - rafts get thrown to center & RR. Lou-Phi jumps off cataraft and hit wall by raft.  Camp is smaller than I thought but folks frazzled and it's late. A bit of rain at night - river gets some silt that clears later.  Camp km 87 RR (small). Pasta dinner (Lacey).

Oct2 (Day5) 29 km; class III. Lots of IIIs today. Pass Huacrachuco and stop briefly. See USA/Peruvian dam survey crew at Puente Jitaraxan - flow is 68 cms.  Peter is not there so I arrange a message to get to him to meet us at the hot springs downstream.  Enter beautiful canyon section and camp at ideal big beach before Cañas.  Camp km 116 RL.  Tamale dinner. 

Oct3 (Day6) 18 km; class III.  Day starts with stop at Q.Cañas - awesome short side hike like GCC. Stop late morning at fallen bridge and go up to Huchus since invited by villagers. Lunch here or snacks only.  Spend 2+ hrs here.  Downstream, great surf wave below R.Actuy. Make it to Aguas Termales and camp. Folks generally against layover here but it rains later and several change their mind.   Camp km 134 RL. Panang curry dinner.

Following the coastline of Titicaca

EN: We left the Castle-hostel of Christian and arrived today after 3 hard days in Pomata. We are staying tonight with the local extreme sport guys. They do kayak (they built their own), rock climbing and kitesurfing. Gadiel has pain in his left forearm but with a bandage he can continue for now. Kayaking close to the shore helps us to meet people, they wave at us, wanna speak to us (well they wanna know what is the thing we are into as they've never seen a kayak before) and most are very conscious of the pollution and one man was very upset as he remembers "gringos" coming to look for oil in the lake.

Every morning we are frozen for 2 hours and the same at night when we finish in the dark under the full moon. But days are sunny and warm. I always get wet as I go close to shore to take the GPS points and the lake is so shallow that the waves crushing onto my kayak are not small so I get water in the cockpit. We hope to pass the border to Bolivia on saturday and go as far as Copacabana.

ES: Salimos del castillo-Hostel de cristiano y llegamos hoy después de 3 días duros en Pomata. Nos quedamos esta noche con los chicos de deportes extremos locales. Lo hacen kayak (construyeron su propio), escalada en roca y el kitesurf. Gadiel tiene dolor en el antebrazo izquierdo, pero con un vendaje que pueda continuar por ahora. Kayak cerca de la orilla, nos ayuda a encontrar la gente, que onda en nosotros, quiero hablar con nosotros (pues quieren saber qué es lo que somos en lo que nunca han visto un kayak antes) y la mayoría son muy conscientes de la contaminación y un hombre estaba muy molesto cuando se acuerda de "gringos" que vienen a buscar petróleo en el lago. Cada mañana se congelan durante 2 horas y el mismo en la noche cuando terminamos en la oscuridad bajo la luna llena. Pero los días son soleados y cálidos. Yo siempre me mojo como voy cerca de la costa para tomar los puntos de GPS y el lago es tan poco profunda que las olas de trituración en mi kayak no son pequeñas, así que conseguir el agua en la cockpit. Esperamos pasar la frontera a Bolivia el sábado y llegar hasta Copacabana.

Back from Clipperton island

 

 

EN: The Cordell expedition to Clipperton island TX5K was a success. Radio operators made over 113.000 contacts all around the world. I learned a lot about the island, its ecosystem and past history. I was there to film, to perform scientific observations and collect sand samples. Already 5 foraminifera were found in the samples. The species were never reported on the island before. I had the opportunity to kayak round the lagoon of Clipperton, do some air photography using a KiteCam. You can read the blog of the expedition here or even see me quickly on CBS. To explain that video, the team was receiving food from the boat excepting on days the waves or surf was too dangerous for the zodiacs to come in, so during 2 days we received almost nothing and had to use emergency food and ration water. The fun part is that we had several beercans, which can be considered as fluid+meal. I have some photos here; and yes there is a lot of plastic garbage on the island. The plastic continents or garbage gyres are surely real, I've seen it with my eyes now.

FR: L'expédition Cordell à l'île de Clipperton TX5K fût un succès. Les radioamateurs ont réalisé plus de 113.000 contacts autour de la planète. J'ai appris beaucoup à propos de l'île, son écosystème et son histoire. J'ai filmé, réalisé des observations scientifiques et collecté des échantillons de sable. On y a déjà trouvé 5 espèces de foraminifères. Jamais on en avait découvert sur l'île. J'ai eu la chance de pouvoir faire le tour du lagon en kayak, de prendre des clichés photo via cerf-volant. Vous pouvez leire le blog de l'expédition ou me voir brièvement sur CBS. Pour expliquer cette vidéo, l'équipe recevait une fois par jour de la nourriture et de l'eau à partir du bateau; sauf lorsque cela était trop dangereux pour les zodiacs pour passer à travers les vagues et la houle. Les Allemands avaient apporté de la bière ce qui complétait (un repas complet) nos rations de survies. Quelques photos; et oui il y a énormément de déchets plastiques qui échouent sur Clipperton. Les continents plastiques sont une réalité, je l'ai vu des déchets dériver de mes yeux.

EN: The best part of being a member of the Explorers Club is that I meet incredible people who have so many interesting stories to tell. I'm staying in San Diego at Bonita and Dick Long's house. Today I talked about the Amazon with Rocky Contos who discovered (very potentially) the new furthest source of the Amazon river. His photos and the way he explained me his findings left me with no doubt I was talking to a very smart person, avid kayaker with a deep common sense to prove he has not only discovered but also went down the entire length of the river a few months ago. Tomorrow, I leave on a boat as I joined the Expedition Clipperton so I won't blog before the end of March. Go on the site and follow the expedition's blog.

FR: Le plus chouette lorsqu'on est membre de l'Explorers Club, c'est que l'on rencontre des personnes incroyables qui ont du vécu très intéressant. Je suis à San Diego chez Bonita et Dick Long. J'ai discuté aujourd'hui avec Rocky Contos qui a découvert et visté il y a quelques mois la nouvelle source la plus éloignée du fleuve Amazone. Il m'a montré ses photos et expliqué ses trouvailles. Un homme intelligent, doué de bon sens et kayakiste de rivière accompli. Demain, je pars en bateau pour car j'ai joint l'expédition Clipperton donc plus de blog avant fin Mars. Trek and kayak in Poland - Marek Kaminski

EN: I'm leaving this Saturday to Poland. On Monday I should start this new expedition POLAND TREK across the entire country from south to north. I will be the first week with Tomasz, a local adventurer, then continue alone on the Vistula river for about 1000km in packraft then kayak. But there will be a film crew on boat to film the journey and meet with me a few times per day. Of course I'll meet the Polish people of the river and other enthusiast kayakers to share moments on the river.

FR: Je pars ce samedi en Pologne. Lundi je commence Poland Trek, une nouvelle expédition à travers tout le pays. La première semaine je serai avec Tomasz un aventurier local. Puis je continuerai seul sur la Vistule, cette longue rivière sur environ 1000km dans un packraft et en kayak. Mais une équipe de tournage situé sur un bateau me rejoindra régulièrement. Evidemment j'irai rencontrer les Polonais de la rivière et les kayakistes enthousiastes pour partager des moments de vie sur la rivière.
