South of Bogota

 

 

EN: I pass through the city of Cali to visit the zoo, take a salsa dancing course and walk down the Cats path. Further south, I visit the UNESCO heritage site of San Agustin with all its statues. I meet a young Australian (Jack) wo wants to climb K2 and a Frenchman (Méryl) who happens to have as godfather a documentary director I've met at an adventure film festival. We travel to Popayan, then Ipiales (photo temple of Las Lajas). We split at the border but we have in mind to perhaps meet again to climb Mount Chimborazo together.

FR: J'effectue un passage à la ville de Cali pour y visiter le zoo, prendre un cours de salsa et visiter l'allée des chats. Plus au sud, je visite San Agustin et les statues patrimoine de l'UNESCO. Je rencontre un jeune Australien (Jack) qui veut gravir le K2 et un Français (Méryl) dont le hasard fait que j'ai déjà rencontré son parrain réalisateur de films documentaires à un festival de film d'aventure. On voyage ensemble jusqu'à Popayan puis Ipiales (photo du temple Las Lajas). On se sépare à la frontière mais on va probablement se revoir puisque nous 3 voulons gravir le Chimborazo, ensemble si possible.

Back to Bogota

 

 

EN: Back to Bogota to visit the main attractions: the old town, the Monserrate where you have a superb view of the capital, the gold museum and the art museum. But the art is mainly on the walls in the streets. I heard Bogota is the graffiti capital of the world. It might be true.

FR: Retour à Bogota pour visiter les principales attractions: La vieille ville, le Monserrate d'où l'on peut voir quasi toute la capitale, le musée de l'or et le musée de l'art. Mais l'art est surtout omniprésente sur les murs dans les rues. J'ai entendu que Bogota serait la capitale mondiale du graffiti. C'est peut-être vrai.

North of Bogota

EN: My first 10 days of travel brought me to Cartagena and Santa Marta at the Carribean coast. Lovely cities, very warm weather, boiling of life. Highlights: Tayrona parc, 2 dives at the fishing village of Taganga and trying to find the pier of this photo on Tierra Bomba island. I failed. In Cartagena I was there at the same time as kayak goddess Freya Hoffmeister (touring South America by kayak in 3 years) but apart from a quick call, our schedules didn't fit. I also saw the google streetview car so I believe in a few months Colombia will be in streetview. I visited Medellin and loved the Darwin Explora parc where we could see original documents of Charles Darwin. The Botero museum was super.

FR: Mes 10 premiers jours de voyage m'ont amené à Carthagène et Santa Marta aux Caraïbes. Superbes villes, temps très chaud, vie trépidente. Temps forts: parc de Tayrona, 2 plongées au village de pêcheurs de Taganga et tentative (échouée) de retrouver ce ponton sur l'île de Tierra Bomba. J'étais en même temps à Carthagène que la déesse du kayak Freya Hoffmeister (tour de l'Amérique du Sud en kayak sur 3 ans) mais à part un rapide coup de téléphone, nos agendas ne coïncidaient pas. J'ai aussi vu la voiture Google Streetview donc il faut s'attendre à voir la Colombie dans Streetview dans quelques mois. J'ai visité Medellin et adoré le parc Darwin Explora où l'on peut notemment voir les documents originaux de Charles Darwin. Le musée de Botero en vaut la peine.

EN: In a nutshell, I will arrive in Colombia this Thursday and then I have 8 months  to move to Ushuaia by every means possible. This Into the Wild project starts! It's about having various experiences. I planned a few climbs and expeditions on the way:

Mountains: (1) Cotopaxi and (2) Chimborazo (Ecuador), (3) Huascaran (Peru) too expensive, not enough experience, (4) Sajama (Bolivia), (5) Ojos del Salado* (Chile). Perhaps I'll do others.

Expeditions:

TitiKayak expedition (A): world first attempt(?) to kayak around lake Titicaca. I can't find anyone who did it yet (as far as my searches go but still searching). I don’t know why. I want to take GPS positions of the shores locations + photos of the shore and background. This will create the first inventory of the lake’s shore that could be in the future compared like we do today with glacier’s photos taken in the past. Lake Titicaca is retreating of about 5 meters per year! Too many humans take water from the sources feeding the lake and of course polluting it. I might also do some scientifitic work also but still in discussion.
Salar Trek (B): Attempt to cross the 2 largest salars: Coipasa and Uyuni. This without any support at all. I think it’s possible in 8-9 days to cover the 250km starting with a pack of max 50kg (water, food, equipment). * On that mountain, I will attempt to locate the highest lake (located in Argentina) in the world. No one have even been near the lake to confirm it is a lake or give an exact GPS position or measure its circumference.
Patagonia Trek (C): If time I have I want to do a remote trek for a few weeks. Of course along my journey, I'll visit places, meet people and have a few surprises planned.

FR: En bref, j'arrive en Colombie ce jeudi et je me donne 8 mois pour atteindre Ushuaia par n'importe quel moyen. C'est le début de ce projet Into the Wild! Le but est de vivre des expériences diverses. J'ai planifié quelques sommets (voir plus haut) et expéditions.
TitiKayak (A): première mondiale en tentant le tour complet du lac Titicaca en kayak. J'ai pas pu trouver quelqu'un qui l''a fait, étonnant, non? Mais je continue de chercher. Je veux prendre des points GPS et des photos de la côte et du paysage en arrière plan afin de créer le premier inventaire photographique des bords du lacs; le but étant de pouvoir comparer dans le futur un peu comme on compare la fonte des glaciers aujourd'hui avec les photos du passé. Ce lac rétrécit de 5 mètres par an! La population grandit et prend plus d'eau des sources qui l'alimentent et la pollution devient un vrai problème. Il est possible que j'aide à des mesures scientifiques. C'est en discussion. 
Salar Trek (B): Tentative de traversée en autonomie complète des 2 grands salars: Coipasa and Uyuni. Je crois que c'est possible en 8-9 jours en partant avec un sac à dos de max 50kg (vivres, eau, équipement). *Sur ce sommet je veux trouver le plus haut lac du monde et le mesurer: position GPS exacte, circonférence... et confirmer son existence.
Patagonia Trek (C): Si j'ai assez de temps, je veux faire un trek engagé de plusieurs semaines en Patagonie.

Krakow Adventure festival 3 elements

EN: I met back with Polish adventure and friend Tomasz Grzywaczewski in Krakow. It was the 10 years and best of the adventure festival Three Elements. I was a special guest and I did a talk about Poland Trek, Tomek was translating and it was great fun as the audience was cracked up. Tomek wrote a book (Przez dziki Wschód) about his first adventure from Siberia to India, following the book of Sławomir Rawicz; the same journey French adventure Sylvain Tesson did in 2004.

FR: J'ai revu l'aventurier Polonias et ami Tomasz Grzywaczewski à Cracovie. C'était les 10 ans du festival du film d'aventure Trois Elements. J'y ai fait une conférence à propos de Poland Trek. Tomek traduisait et toute l'assemblée était morte de rire, complicité entre nous qui fût très improvisée. Tomek a écrit un livre sur son aventure de Sibérie à l'Inde (Przez dziki Wschód), le même projet que Sylvain Tesson en 2004 dans les pas de Sławomir Rawicz.

TEDxWarsaw Poland Trek

EN: I did my first TEDx talk in Warsaw and I had a wonderful time with the speakers and the audience who kept asking me questions until 4am.
FR: J'ai fait ma première conférence TEDx à Varsovie et ce fût fantastique de discuter avec les autres conférenciers et le public jusqu'à 4h du matin.

Back from Clipperton island

 

 

EN: The Cordell expedition to Clipperton island TX5K was a success. Radio operators made over 113.000 contacts all around the world. I learned a lot about the island, its ecosystem and past history. I was there to film, to perform scientific observations and collect sand samples. Already 5 foraminifera were found in the samples. The species were never reported on the island before. I had the opportunity to kayak round the lagoon of Clipperton, do some air photography using a KiteCam. You can read the blog of the expedition here or even see me quickly on CBS. To explain that video, the team was receiving food from the boat excepting on days the waves or surf was too dangerous for the zodiacs to come in, so during 2 days we received almost nothing and had to use emergency food and ration water. The fun part is that we had several beercans, which can be considered as fluid+meal. I have some photos here; and yes there is a lot of plastic garbage on the island. The plastic continents or garbage gyres are surely real, I've seen it with my eyes now.

FR: L'expédition Cordell à l'île de Clipperton TX5K fût un succès. Les radioamateurs ont réalisé plus de 113.000 contacts autour de la planète. J'ai appris beaucoup à propos de l'île, son écosystème et son histoire. J'ai filmé, réalisé des observations scientifiques et collecté des échantillons de sable. On y a déjà trouvé 5 espèces de foraminifères. Jamais on en avait découvert sur l'île. J'ai eu la chance de pouvoir faire le tour du lagon en kayak, de prendre des clichés photo via cerf-volant. Vous pouvez leire le blog de l'expédition ou me voir brièvement sur CBS. Pour expliquer cette vidéo, l'équipe recevait une fois par jour de la nourriture et de l'eau à partir du bateau; sauf lorsque cela était trop dangereux pour les zodiacs pour passer à travers les vagues et la houle. Les Allemands avaient apporté de la bière ce qui complétait (un repas complet) nos rations de survies. Quelques photos; et oui il y a énormément de déchets plastiques qui échouent sur Clipperton. Les continents plastiques sont une réalité, je l'ai vu des déchets dériver de mes yeux.

EN: The best part of being a member of the Explorers Club is that I meet incredible people who have so many interesting stories to tell. I'm staying in San Diego at Bonita and Dick Long's house. Today I talked about the Amazon with Rocky Contos who discovered (very potentially) the new furthest source of the Amazon river. His photos and the way he explained me his findings left me with no doubt I was talking to a very smart person, avid kayaker with a deep common sense to prove he has not only discovered but also went down the entire length of the river a few months ago. Tomorrow, I leave on a boat as I joined the Expedition Clipperton so I won't blog before the end of March. Go on the site and follow the expedition's blog.

FR: Le plus chouette lorsqu'on est membre de l'Explorers Club, c'est que l'on rencontre des personnes incroyables qui ont du vécu très intéressant. Je suis à San Diego chez Bonita et Dick Long. J'ai discuté aujourd'hui avec Rocky Contos qui a découvert et visté il y a quelques mois la nouvelle source la plus éloignée du fleuve Amazone. Il m'a montré ses photos et expliqué ses trouvailles. Un homme intelligent, doué de bon sens et kayakiste de rivière accompli. Demain, je pars en bateau pour car j'ai joint l'expédition Clipperton donc plus de blog avant fin Mars. Los Angeles and San Francisco

 
 

EN: Los Angeles was the place to relax before the 5 next weeks of hard work. Slow night in Santa Monica (photo of the beach), walked to Venice beach and a few visits in LA. I took the greyhound overnight and it has been now 1 day I arrived at Bob's place (see his wall full of expeditions photos) to work on the Clipperton 2013 expedition. The expedition has the Explorers Club flag #134 (photo). I'll probably do a last post at the end of the week and then you'll have to follow for 1 month blog here.

FR: Los Angeles était l'endroit pour me relaxer avant les 5 semaines de travail acharné qui m'attend. Une soirée calme à Santa Monica, une ballade à pied vers Venice beach et un peu de visite à LA. J'ai pris le bus la nuit et je suis depuis 1 jour chez Bob (voir son mur de photos d'expéditions) et on travaille sur la Clipperton 2013 expedition qui a le drapeau de l'Explorers Club #134 (photo). Encore probablement 1 post avant de partir fin de semaine après il faudra suivre pendant 1 mois l'expé ici sur le blog.

NYC to San Diego

FR: A New-York, j'ai visité 2 fois l'explorers Club et assisté à 2 conférences. J'ai revu une amie Américaine qui avait passé 1 an en Belgique il y a 17 ans (merci Facebook) ainsi que mon cousin. Au musée de l'air (dans un porte-avions) j'ai assisté à une conférence de l'astronaute Jerry Ross. Vendredi j'ai pris le bus vers Vineland dans le New Jersey et j'ai fait une conférence dans une école. J'ai ensuité passé 2 jours calmes avec la famille Snow qu im'avait déjà accueilli en 2005 lorsqu'ils vivaient à Auckland en Nouvelle Zélande. J'ai regardé le Super Bowl dans une auberge à Philadephie (faudra repasser visiter la ville) et j'ai attéri à San Diego ce lundi, visité quelques musées et donné une petite conférence chez un membre de l'Explorers Club. Mes journées sont très remplies. Je prend le train vers Los Angeles et j'y arrive ce mercredi après-midi. En bas vous voyez la photo de l'Atlantique prise à Atlantic City (le Las Végas de la côte Est où j'ai fait un arrêt bus) et la façade de l'école.

EN: I visited twice the Explorers Club and attended to 2 talks. I reconnected with an American friend who had spent 1 year in Belgium 17 years ago (thanks Facebook) and also reconnected with my cousin. At the air museum (in an aircraft carrier), I listened to astronaut Jerry Ross. Friday I took the bus to Vineland (NJ) via Atlantic City (photo of the Atlantic Ocean). I did a talk in a local school (photo facade) and spent the weekend with the Snow family, who had already hosted me in 2005 while traveling in New Zealand (they lived in Auckland). This monday I landed in San Diego, visited a few museums and did a talk at the house of a local Explorers Club member. My days are very busy. I'm taking the train to LA and will arrive there this afternoon.
