Pete Casey Ascent of the Amazon

  

 

EN: Ten years ago I met Pete Casey in London. He had a project for an immense expedition: Ascending the Amazon river by foot (and swim). So he never used a boat, not even to cross the river to go to the other side. He used many times local people from the villages as guides, and they were crossing rivers in 2 packrafts: 1 with the local guide and the second packraft attached with both backpacks so Pete could swim without holding to his massive backpack. I attended his talk organized by the Explorers Club in London.
What Pete did is truly one of the biggest (hard) expedition of the decade and it certainly should be listed in the top 100 adventures of modern history (after 1980 or so). The journey took over 6 and a half years including resting, planning, making more money getting permits and being locked down because of the Coronavirus pandemic.

In the photo at the top right, you can see Gadiel Sanchez Rivera, with whom I travelled around Lake Titicaca in 2013. Gadiel is undoubtedly one of Peru's greatest adventurers.

FR: Il y a dix ans, j'ai rencontré Pete Casey à Londres. Il avait un projet d'expédition gigantesque : remonter le fleuve Amazone à pied (et à la nage). Il n'a donc jamais utilisé de bateau, pas même pour traverser le fleuve et rejoindre l'autre rive. Il a souvent fait appel à des habitants des villages locaux comme guides, et ils traversaient les fleuves à bord de deux packrafts : l'un avec le guide local et le second attaché avec les deux sacs à dos dedans afin que Pete puisse nager sans avoir à porter son énorme sac à dos. J'ai assisté à sa conférence organisée par l'Explorers Club à Londres.

Ce que Pete a accompli est véritablement l'une des plus grandes (et difficiles) expéditions de la décennie et devrait certainement figurer dans le top 100 des aventures de l'histoire moderne (après 1980 environ). Le voyage a duré plus de six ans et demi, y compris le repos, la planification, la recherche de fonds pour obtenir les permis et le confinement dû à la pandémie de coronavirus.

Sur la photo en haut à droit on voit Gadiel Sanchez Rivera avec qui j'avais fait le tour du Lac Titicaca en 2013. Gadiel est sans doute un des plus grands aventuriers Péruviens.
