Nature photography and films with Canon

I attended the CANON experience lab in Brussels and discussed with nature and wildlife photographer Michel d'Oultremont and director Bernard Crutzen. Below some of their work.

Ocean Film Festival

EN: I went for the first time to the Ocean Film Festival in Brussels. I talked with Hanli Prinsloo and listened to her and Belgian freediver Fred Buyle. A great evening where I could finally see the film of friends Justine Curgenven (kayak) and French Corentin de Chatelperron "Gold of Bengal".

FR: J'ai été pour la première fois au Ocean Film festival à Bruxelles. J'ai parlé avec Hnali Prinsloo, je l'ai écouté ainsi que l'apnéiste Belge Fred Buyle. Une belle soirée où j'ai pu enfin voir les films de connaissances Justine Curgenven (kayak) et le Français Corentin de Chatelperron et son Gold of Bengal.

World First on Salar de Uyuni and Coipasa in Bolvia

EN: I made it in Bolivia on my second attempt to traverse the 2 Bolivians Salars Uyuni and Coipasa. The experience gained in Death Valley and the Simpson Desert helped. I didn't even train at all between the 4 weeks from the end of the trek in Australia and the start in Bolivia. A lot are now asking me "What's Next?" Well, I have over 20 ideas but nothing planned and I dunno which one will be next. For sure it's gonna be in the winter, cold or wet (kayak)


FR: J'ai réussi à ma deuxième tentative la traverse des 2 Salars de Bolivie Uyuni et Coipasa. L'expérience acquise dans la Vallée de la Mort et le Désert de Simpson ont aidé. Je ne me suis meme pas entraîné pendant les 4 semaines qui ont séparées la fin du trek en Australie et lé début ce celui en Bolivie. Pas mal de personnes me demandent "Et la suite?" Eh bien, j'ai plus de 20 idées mais rien de planifié et je ne sais pas lequel sera le projet suivant. Ce sera en hiver, froid ou mouillé (kayak).

Salar Trek Bolivia Expedition

EN: 3 years ago, I made an attempt to walk unsupported from Sabaya to Uyuni in Bolivia, across the salt flats. My route rather central via Isla Pescado and Isla Incahuasi. I abandoned due to a lack of water to finish the last +-90km. I was too slow. My main problem was my too heavy equipment. I'm flying today to Bolivia and in 48h or so I should be North of both Salars of Coipasa and Salar de Uyuni.

FR: Il y a 3 ans, j'ai fait une tentative de marche en autonomie complète entre Sabaya et Uyuni en Bolivie, sur les lacs salés. Ma route était centrale via Isla Pescado et Isla Incahuasi. J'ai abandonné à cause du manque d'eau pour terminer les +- 90km restants. J'étais trop lent. Mon problème principal était un équipement trop lourd. Je décolle ce soir vers la Bolivie et dans 48 heures environ je devrais être au Nord des deux Salar de Coipasa et Salar de Uyuni.

10 years of expeditions

EN: Exactly 10 years ago, I was dropped North-West of the West MacDonnell National Park after a 3 hour drive from Alice Springs. I left with a "heavy" pack of 35kg with my tent, sleeping bag and part of my water clipped on the outside, heading for the first of the 4 major summits of the park Mount Zeil, which is also the highest summit of Australia outside the Great Dividing Range (the East Coast). After following mainly the Larapinta trail for 11 full days of walking, I made this world first trek and crossing. Sad news I heard and was shocked also that on 4 Sept 2006, Steve Irwin died. RIP Steve.

PS: On that day, my drivers told me they had just crossed with their 4WD a desert called the Simpson and I asked them if there were any nice walking trails there. To that they replied NO it's the Simpson Desert, there is nothing there you can't walk in there! It's unthinkable.

FR: Il y a exactement 10 ans, j'étais déposé au Nord-Ouest du parc national du West MacDonnell après 3 heures de route depuis Alice Springs. Je partis avec un sac "lourd" de 35kg avec ma tente, mon sac de couchage et une partie de mon eau attaché à l'extérieur de mon sac, en direction du premier des 4 grands sommets du parc, le Mont Zeil, qui est aussi le plus haut sommet d'Australie en dehors de la Cordillère Australienne (Côte Est). Après avoir suivi principalement le sentier Larapinta pendant 11 jours complets de trek, je réussissais cette première mondiale. Nouvelle triste, ce 4 Septembre 2006, Steve Irwin fût tué.

PS: Ce jour-là, mes conducteurs me parlaient d'un désert qu'ils venaient de traverser en 4*4 qui s'appelle le Simpson. Je leur demandais s'il y avait de belles pistes de randonnées dans ce désert et ils me répondirent que NON c'était le Désert de Simpson, on n'y marche pas, c'est impensable!

Simpson Desert Trek 2

EN: 8 years after my first trek, I'm nearly in Australia to start the Simpson desert trek 2 expedition, this time without a cart. All details will be on the Desert Expedition website. Stay tuned on also for special content on my facebook fan page.

It's 80 years since Ted Colson did the first crossing of the Simpson with 5 camels.

EN: At Creative Mornings Brussels today, I went to listen to the stories and presentation of professional photographer Justin Jin. He highlighted 2 reportages about the arctic or China.

FR: A Creative Mornings Brussels aujourd'hui, j'ai écouté les histoires du photographe pro Justin Jin. Il nous a parlé d'un reportage en Arctique et un en Chine.

Hallerbos in blossom

EN: I cycled to Hallerbos to photography the Blue Forest. I had not used my Canon 450D DSLR since 2012 as the autofocus in broken and in expedition I need to be quick, no time to take other shots. Here I took the time to shot manually. No photoshop and no filters. You can see more Blue Forest Hallerbos photos on my facebook page including 360 degrees photography shot my the Panono camera.

FR: J'ai roulé à vélo jusqu'au bois de Halle pour photographier la Forêt Bleue. Je n'avais pas sorti mon Reflex Canon 450D depuis 2012 car l'autofocus est naze; et en expédition, je dois être rapide, pas le temps pour prendre plusieurs photos. Ici, j'ai pu prendre le temps de tout faire en manuel. Pas de photoshop ni filtre. Travel Storytelling Festival

EN: I went to the first edition of the Travel Storytelling Festival this evening. It feels great Belgium has finally a real festival celebrating travel and adventure. I saw a few friends from Belgium and abroad like Dave Cornthwaite.

FR: En cette soirée, j'ai été à la première édition du Travel Storytelling Festival à Bruxelles. La Belgique a enfin un festival pour les voyageurs et aventuriers. J'y ai revu des amis Belges et étrangers comme Dave Cornthwaite.
