EN: After a week in Bolivia, we spent very hard days to do out job: taking underwater photography to locate better the habitat of the endangered lake Titicaca freshwater frog, take GPS points to the coastline and photos of the landscapes. We met only one person who had seen a kayak before. The 3 most frequently asked questions were:

1) You don't have an engine in your kayak boat ?

2) How much is it, can I buy it ?

3) Don't you capsize in the water with the waves ?

Today we were lucky to be invited to pass the night in the hotel of the SUASI island. WIFI, buffet, hot shower and nice bed. And best of all, our gear that spent 26 days in customs in Lima, got to Puno and from Puno a direct boat with tourists to the island. We now have carbon fiber paddles (thanks to SELECT), from 5 USD repaired sunglasses to super polarized sunglasses (thanks JULBO) and from PowerTraveller we received our Powermonkeys gear (solar panels and batteries). I also bought a Katadyn waterfilter to get more water from the lake as we enter remote places with large polluted river (Thanks Dad, I owe you money... again). No reason to fail as we have excellent gear now!

ES: Después de una semana en Bolivia, pasamos días muy dificil para trabajar: tomar la fotografía submarina para localizar mejor el hábitat de la rana del lago Titicaca de agua dulce, tomar puntos GPS de la costa y las fotos de los paisajes. Encontramos una sola persona que había visto un kayak antes. Las 3 preguntas más frecuentes han sido:
1) No hay motor en el kayak?
2) ¿Cuánto cuesta, ¿puedo comprarlo?
3) ¿No se da vuelta con las olas?
Hoy tuvimos la suerte de ser invitado a pasar la noche en el hotel de la isla SUASI. WIFI, buffet, ducha caliente y una buena cama. Y lo mejor de todo nuestro equipo que pasó 26 días en la aduana en Lima, llegó a Puno y de Puno con un barco directo con los turistas a la isla. Ahora tenemos palas de fibra de carbono (gracias a SELECT), pasamos de 5 dolares gafas reparadas hasta gafas de sol polarizadas (gracias JULBO) y de PowerTraveller recibimos nuestro equipo Powermonkeys (paneles solares y baterías). También compré un Katadyn (filtrar agua) para obtener más agua del lago porque vamos a entrar en lugares remotos con un grandes ríos contaminados (Gracias papá, te deben dinero ... otra vez). No hay razón para dejar que tenemos un excelente equipo ahora!

Lago Menor Bolivia

EN: It took us a bit more than 1 week to go around the lake minor (the part fully in Bolivia). It was very hard and cold. We received news of abnormal cold weather and indeed our kayaks, tents, water and feet got frozen every day. Yesterday we were back in the detroit of Tiquina. We slept in the army barracks and I got the privilege to dive in lake Titicaca (3800m) to -6m with low visibility but I saw many frogs. Happy. We are tired, muscles are sore but the spirits are high. We just resupplied with normally enough food to complete the expedition in a bit more than 2 weeks. Even if halfway, the rest of the distance seems "easier". We we often blocked or lost in a jungle of Totora plants. It took us hours to get out or just to get to the shore to take one GPS point. An area of 200km2 of Totora was unpassable according to the locals so we didn't enter as it was going to be dark, so we headed for an island 7km away. We even got escorted in the dark by a local in his motorboat of the 100 people island. We are amazed people have never seen a kayak before. Even two 14 year old kids had never seen a white man and found it funny I had hair on my arms.

ES:Nos tomó un poco más de 1 semana para dar la vuelta al lago menor (la parte plenamente en Bolivia). Fue muy duro y frío. Hemos recibido la noticia de frío anormal y de hecho nuestros kayaks, tiendas de campaña, agua y los pies congelados dieron todos los días. Ayer estábamos de regreso en el Detroit de Tiquina. Dormimos en los cuarteles del ejército y me dieron el privilegio de sumergirse en el lago Titicaca (3800m) a 6m con baja visibilidad pero vimos muchas ranas. Feliz. Estamos cansados​​, los músculos están doloridos, pero los espíritus son altos. Acabamos reabastecidos con normalidad alimentos suficientes para completar la expedición de un poco más de 2 semanas. Incluso si a mitad de camino, el resto de la distancia parece "más fácil". Nosotros a menudo nos bloqueamos o perdidos en una selva de plantas de totora. Nos tomó horas para salir o simplemente para llegar a la orilla para tomar un punto de GPS. Un área de 200km2 de Totora era infranqueable según los lugareños, así que no entramos, ya que iba a ser oscuro, así que se dirigió hacia una isla 7 km. Desaguadero

EN: We are back in Bolivia after a 2,5 days in Peru. Yes, the borders are everywhere. We had a bad evening trying to find a camp as we were lost in a maze of mud and totora plant, all in total darkness. We went to bed cold but not wet. Internet will become harder so news will probably be posted by friends at the South American Explorers as we will all them to make the updates. So no photos yet.

ES: Regressamos en Bolivia después de 2,5 días en Perú. Sí, las fronteras están en todas partes. Bolivia

EN: After 3 days of paperwork we passed the border and entered Bolvia. We now can go anywhere on the lake in Peru and Bolivia. By coincidence, we met Arturo (our Bolivian frog scientist) earlier than expected, we saw the freshwater endangered frog. The next day, we met with the Bolvian NAVY but more precisely with the CIBA (Centro de Instrucción de Buceo en Altura) scubadiving center in altitude. As they promised me they will help us and let me do a dive next week when back in Tiquina, I gave them the privilege to see the Explorers Club flag. Gadiel and I try to catch up with the 3 days witthout paddling so we paddle until well after dark. We should be in Desaguadero by Monday morning.

ES: Después de 3 días de papeleo que pasamos la frontera y entramos en Bolvia. Ahora podemos ir a cualquier parte en el lago en Perú y Bolivia. Por casualidad, nos encontramos con Arturo (nuestra rana científico boliviano) antes de lo esperado, hemos visto a la rana en peligro de extinción de agua dulce. Al día siguiente, nos reunimos con el Bolvian NAVY pero más precisamente con la (Centro de Instrucción de Buceo en Altura) Centro de submarinismo CIBA de altitud. Como me prometieron que nos van a ayudar y me deja hacer una inmersión próxima semana cuando de nuevo en Tiquina, que les dio el privilegio de ver la bandera del Club de Exploradores. Pomata and Storm

EN: We spent time with the extreme sport people of Pomata, they built their own kayaks and followed us for a bit until the storm hit us all while we were following a cliff so impossible to land on shore for 2 hours. Yesterday we also got hit by heavy winds and rain and has to stop after a few hours of paddling. Today the weather wasn't great and we followed the coast on foot and will do the border paperwork. Tomorrow an early start into Bolivia. This afternoon, the sun is back!

ES: Pasamos tiempo con los deportistas extremos de Pomata, construyeron sus propios kayaks y nos siguieron durante un rato hasta que la tormenta nos golpeó a la vez que cumplimos con un precipicio tan imposible aterrizar en tierra durante 2 horas. Ayer también fue golpeada por los fuertes vientos y la lluvia y tiene que parar después de unas horas de remar. Hoy en día el clima no era muy bueno y seguimos la costa a pie y va a hacer el papeleo frontera. Mañana un comienzo temprano en Bolivia. Esta tarde, el sol está de vuelta!

Following the coastline of Titicaca

EN: We left the Castle-hostel of Christian and arrived today after 3 hard days in Pomata. We are staying tonight with the local extreme sport guys. They do kayak (they built their own), rock climbing and kitesurfing. Gadiel has pain in his left forearm but with a bandage he can continue for now. Kayaking close to the shore helps us to meet people, they wave at us, wanna speak to us (well they wanna know what is the thing we are into as they've never seen a kayak before) and most are very conscious of the pollution and one man was very upset as he remembers "gringos" coming to look for oil in the lake.

Every morning we are frozen for 2 hours and the same at night when we finish in the dark under the full moon. But days are sunny and warm. I always get wet as I go close to shore to take the GPS points and the lake is so shallow that the waves crushing onto my kayak are not small so I get water in the cockpit. We hope to pass the border to Bolivia on saturday and go as far as Copacabana.

ES: Salimos del castillo-Hostel de cristiano y llegamos hoy después de 3 días duros en Pomata. Nos quedamos esta noche con los chicos de deportes extremos locales. Lo hacen kayak (construyeron su propio), escalada en roca y el kitesurf. Gadiel tiene dolor en el antebrazo izquierdo, pero con un vendaje que pueda continuar por ahora. Kayak cerca de la orilla, nos ayuda a encontrar la gente, que onda en nosotros, quiero hablar con nosotros (pues quieren saber qué es lo que somos en lo que nunca han visto un kayak antes) y la mayoría son muy conscientes de la contaminación y un hombre estaba muy molesto cuando se acuerda de "gringos" que vienen a buscar petróleo en el lago. Cada mañana se congelan durante 2 horas y el mismo en la noche cuando terminamos en la oscuridad bajo la luna llena. Pero los días son soleados y cálidos. Yo siempre me mojo como voy cerca de la costa para tomar los puntos de GPS y el lago es tan poco profunda que las olas de trituración en mi kayak no son pequeñas, así que conseguir el agua en la cockpit. Esperamos pasar la frontera a Bolivia el sábado y llegar hasta Copacabana.

Good start

EN: We have cold mornings and evenings (freezing) and our progress is not bad. I believe we did about 50km in 3 days but 1 day full lost in the labyrinth of Totora plants. In 2 days we will enter a drug dealer zone near rio ILAVE and hope to reach Pomata on thursday evening. We spent 2 night in the tent and tonight in the castle hostel of a Belgian.

ES: Tenemos mañanas frías y tardes (congelación) y nuestro progreso no es malo. Creo que hicimos unos 50 km en 3 días menos 1 día entero perdido en el laberinto de las plantas de totora. In 2 dias vamos a entrar en una zona narcotraficante cerca rio Ilave y la esperanza de llegar a Pomata el jueves por la noche. Pasamos 2 noches en la carpa y esta noche en el albergue de un castillo belga.

EN: We prepared all gear and loaded the kayaks but we will leave finally tomorrow saturday as we spent the day working on solving tiny problems and building a mast for the GoPro to film us from far away or take underwater shots.

ES: Hemos preparado todo el equipo y cargamos los kayaks pero vamos a dejar por fin mañana Sábado ya que pasamos el día trabajando en la solución de problemas pequeños y construir un mástil para la GoPro para filmar desde lejos o tomar fotos bajo el agua.

Kayak lesson and training

 

EN: Today I trained Cho with the basics of seakayaking (enter, exit the kayak, low brace, use of torso to paddle, turn while paddling). I am happy he likes kayaking and he seems comfortable on the water. The cold temperature with the sun makes it very nice to paddle without much sweat. Tomorrow it's our last day of preparation. We have to buy extra warm clothes, more food, charge batteries, sent press releases. This afternoon Edgar came with a local guide to visit us. He told us where to be careful of the drug dealers. The entire afternoon I had a massive headache. Captain Giselle of the Yavari told me it was perhaps a late effect of the altitude. We hope to have internet after 3-4 days of expedition. Stay tuned.

ES: Hoy he entrenado Cho con los fundamentos de kayak de mar (entrar, salir del kayak, bajo llave, uso de torso para remar, girar). Estoy feliz de que le gusta el kayak y parece cómodo en el agua. Good News from Puno

EN: Gadiel and I left Lima on Saturday evening to Arequipa, the second largest city in Peru. We had a few hours to visit the town and took another bus to Puno and arrived yesterday by midday. We are currently staying (thanks to the South American Explorers) on the YAVARI boat. We met with Edgar from Edgar Adventures who is renting us free kayaks and equipment for the expedition. Today we processed emails, met with Christian Nonis, a Belgian who lives near the lake for 30 years and discussed with Víctor Hugo Apaza Vargas, the chief of the Titicaca National Reserve. We concluded that going into the reserve with the kayaks was not practical and would damage more the breeding and fragile areas. So we will only enter the reserve at the end of the circumnavigation of Lake Titicaca under the guidance of Victor, a privilege he is giving us to document that fragile area. At 5pm we received the kayaks and I took a 15 min warm-up and feel already happy in my kayak.

ES: Gadiel y yo salimos de Lima el sábado por la noche a Arequipa, la segunda ciudad más grande de Perú. Tuvimos poco horas para visitar la ciudad y tomamos otro bus para Puno y llegó ayer al mediodía. Nos estamos hospedando (gracias a South American Explorers) en el barco Yavarí. Nos reunimos con Edgar de Edgar Adventures que nos está alquilando kayaks y equipos gratis para la expedición. Hoy procesamos correos electrónicos, encontramos a Christian Nonis, un belga que vive cerca del lago desde hace 30 años y hablamos con Víctor Hugo Apaza Vargas, jefe de la Reserva Nacional del Titicaca. Llegamos a la conclusión de que entrar en la reserva con los kayaks no era práctico y dañaría más la cría y zonas frágiles. Tan solo nos adentraremos en el parque al final de la circunnavegación del lago Titicaca con Víctor, un privilegio que el nos da para documentar esa zona frágil. A las 5 pm recibimos los kayaks y yo tomé un 15 minutos de entrenamiento y estoy feliz en mi kayak.
