Festival Globetrotters

LouPhi, Xavier Rosset

ENG: After each summer, the season of festival quicks off before the winter. I was in Paris this weekend at the Globetrotters festival organized by ABM. I caught up with Jeremy Roumian (last year's Chocolate Sherpa expedition), Christian Clot (Patagonia specialist, Vice-president of the Society of French explorers), Willy Minec, Ludovic Hubler and saw and talked to Swiss adventurer Xavier Rosset who stayed 300 days alone surviving on an Tongan island in the Pacific.

FRA: Après l'été, la saison de festivals débute jusqu'à l'hiver. J'étais à Paris au festival Globetrotters organisé par ABM. J'y ai revu Jeremy Roumian (expé de 2009 Chocolate Sherpa), Christian Clot (spécialiste Patagonie, vice-président de la société des explorateurs Français), Willy Minec, Ludovic Hubler et j'ai vu le film de et parlé à l'aventurier Suisse Xavier Rosset qui a survécu 300 jours seul sur une île Tongaise du Pacifique.

Desert explorers

Ripley Davenport, Louis-Philippe Loncke

ENG: I've been driving to Denmark to meet Ripley Davenport, who trekked across a vast expanse of Mongolia earlier this year. We had discussed trailer design a year ago. We shared experiences, talked about new projects and took a dip in the cold Little belt waters between the North and Baltic seas. Nothing better to refresh desert walkers!

FRA: J'ai roulé jusqu'au Danemarque pour rencontrer Ripley Davenport, qui a fait un trek à travers les terres Mongoles il y a 2 mois. Nous avions discuté de la construction de sa charette l'année passée. Nous avons partagé nos expériences, parlé de nouveaux projets et même fait une brève baignade dans les eaux du Little Belt entre la mer du Nord et la Baltique. Rien de plus rafraîchissant pour des sillonneurs de désert.

The World Tri

Louis-Philippe Loncke, Charlie Wittmack

ENG: This weekend I met the team of The Word Tri(athlon) who was in Brussels. Charlie Wittmack is undertaking a huge challenge: swimming down the Thames from London to the North Sea, across the Channel to Calais, then cycle from there to Calcutta and finishing with an almost 1000km run to the Everest to climb it for the second time as he did it in 2003. I met Charlie, his wife Cate and team in Brussels. I also spend time with the team (Andy Stoll and Brian Triplett)  showing Brussels around while Charlie took a deserved rest after the long swim of Monday. FRA: Ce weekend j'ai rencontré l'équipe de The Word Tri(athlon) à Bruxelles. Charlie Wittmack est occupé à un challenge d'une endurance extrême: descendre à la nage la Tamise depuis Londres puis traverser la Manche jusqu'à Calais, puis pédaler jusque Calcutta et enfin courir jusqu'à l'Everest et atteindre le sommet du monde qu'il a déjà atteint en 2003. Je l'ai rencontré avec son épouse Cate et son équipe (Andy Stoll et Brian Triplett) en leur montrant Bruxelles lorsque Charlie prenait un repos mérité après sa longue nage de Lundi. Flying in Goodyear blimp.

 

ENG: I was lucky to win a 1 hour trip in the Goodyear blimp to day. It's a sort of Zeppelin without structure inside. I'm wondering when I'll learn flying ? Among the photos: the shadow of the aircraft, the atomium & the Koekelberg Basilica, a prison (I guess?), the tour de France and a cycling fan's garden. We had to stay away from the helicopter because of the wind that can get use near them.

FRA: J'ai été chanceux de gagner un vol d'une heure en dirigeable Goodyear. Sans structure, l'engin doit rester éloigné des hélicoptères du tour de France car le vent pourrait le pousser. Je me demande que je commence à apprendre à voler moi ? Parmi les photos: l'ombre de l'aéronef, l'atomium & la basilique de Koekelberg, une prison (?) et un jardin de fan de la grande boucle.

Iceland here I come

ENG: This week I have been to a public speaking of Polar explorer Alain Hubert in Mons, followed by the show "The testament of the Ice". As you know my versatility in exploration, it's now time to reveal where I'll be next week: I will attempt to become the first person to walk unsupported between the extreme lattitude of Iceland, from North to South. This trek will be used to discover the terrain and prepare the first full winter attempt for my first polar journey. Please visit Iceland trek Summer and Winter. Also If you remember my simpson desert trek 2 years ago, I've just found an essay (p93-100) written about it that I find very inspiring. I just don't know when I'll return to the Simpson. Have a nice summer holiday.

FRA: Cette semaine j'ai été écouter une conférence de l'explorateur Alain Hubert à Mons, suivi du concert visuel "Le testament des glaces". Vous connaissez mon coté versatile dans mes projets d'exploration. Et la glace, le milieu polaire en général est un terrain auquel je veux me frotter. Voici donc ma prochaine expédition où je vais tenter une première en faisant un trek en Islande entre les lattitudes extrêmes du Nord au Sud. Ce trek de reconnaissance sert à préparer la première traversée hivernale de l'île volcanique qui sera ma première expédition de type polaire. Visitez le blog du Islande trek été et hiver. Souvenez-vous de mon trek dans le désert de Simpson il y a 2 ans. Lisez cet essai (p93-100) pour être inspiré. Je ne sais pas encore quand je retournerai au Simpson. Passez de bonnes vacances !

Passion for Explorers

ENG: Today I have been to a yearly Rotary Club district meeting in Bruges where Polar explorer Dixie Dansercoer and his American wife Julie did a keynote speech on the passion to (out)perform. I quickly said hi to Dixie then went back to Brussels and spent the afternoon chatting with Julian Monroe Fisher who is fellow of the Explorers Club. We shared stories and a few beers.

FRA: Aujourd'hui j'ai été au meeting annuel du district du Rotary Club à Bruges où j'ai écouté la conférence de l'explorateur polaire Dixie Dansercoer et de sa femme Julie. Le sujet traitait de la passion pour exceller. Après un rapide bonjour à Dixie, j'ai filé vers Bruxelles pour rencontrer Julian Monroe Fisher un membre de l'Explorers Club. Nous avons partagé nos histoires et quelques bières.

Belgium IPY Symposium

ENG: I attended this 1-day conference at the Palace of the Academies. I listened to all scientists showing the contribution of the Belgian research to the achievements of the International Polar Year 2007-2009. It was interesting but complicated (very specific and detailed domains) to understand except for the slideshow of Alain Hubert about the construction of the Princess Elisabeth Antarctic station.

FRA: J'ai suivi cette conférence d'une journée au Palais des Académies. J'ai écouté tous les scientifiques qui ont montré la contribution de la recherche Belge et les résultats obtenus lors de l'année Polaire Internationale 2007-2009. Ce fût intéressant mais compliqué a comprendre (domaines précis et détaillés) sauf pour les diaspos d'Alain Hubert sur la construction de la station Belge Princesse Elisabeth.

Nordic ski trek

ENG: I went on my own learning Nordic ski trekking in the Vercors (France). Three days of fun with bad and good weather.

FRA: Je suis allé m"initier seul au ski de randonée Nordique dans le Vercors. Trois jours de plaisir dans le mauvais ou beau temps.

Papua New Guinea

ENG: Yesterday I’ve been to the Exploration du monde conference in my hometown. The speakers were photojournalist Marc Dozier and Mundiya Kepanga from the Huli tribe of Papua New Guinea. The film was called the “inverse exploration” as it was about Mundiya exploration a strange tribe called the Frenchmen! It shows his journey in France discovering new cultures and comparing them to his. Some trailers on the web.

FRA: Hier, j’ai été à Exploration du monde voir la conférence du journaliste photographe Marc Dozier et de Mundiya Kepanga de la tribu des Huli en Papouasie Nouvelle Guinée. Le superbe documentaire «exploration inversée » raconte le voyage de 2 papous en France découvrant la tribu bizarre des Français. Mundiya compare également les différences et similitudes culturelles avec sa tribu.
