Paddle the Senne river in Brussels

 

 

 

EN: Since last Sunday it is now possible and publicly open to paddle (kayak, canoe, packraft...) on the Senne river in Brussels. Actually in the Flanders at the border, so it's called the Zenne river.

ATTENTION: You can only go from 1 June to 31 March (not from 1 April to 30 May, animal breeding season)

Book your free half day ticket for the Senne.

There is a pontoon at the start and end and you are only allowed to navigate between these two pontoons. The distance is 6.3 km and it is recommended to have 2 hours to paddle and enjoy the river.

The Senne Start pontoon (50°45'56.8"N 4°16'46.9"E) is below a bridge near 9 Zennestraat in Lot. There is some sort of parking in front of the house of this address. Another address with a real public parking is Dworpsestraat 38, 1651 Beersel near the fritkot (french fries house) named Welkom bij Mama (Welcome to mama). From there leave your vehicle, carry you equipment following the river downstream on the right, you walk in the grass, behind some houses and end on a path to the pontoon. It's all safe and easy and just over 300m walk.

The Senne End pontoon (50°47'21.3"N 4°18'44.2"E) is located in the commune of Drogenbos on the Grote baan (near n° 302) road near Het moeras Natuurgebied (the Swamp Nature Reserve). This is also 150m from the ALDI supermarket if you need a parking.

It is free (2023) to paddle but you must register your trip (scan the BLUE QR code). This is mainly for statistics for the authorities to understand if this river route is used and plan any maintenance accordingly I guess. FR: Depuis dimanche dernier, il est possible et autorisé de pagayer (kayak, canoë, packraft...) sur la Senne à Bruxelles. En fait, il s'agit de la rivière Zenne, située à la frontière de la Flandre.

ATTENTION : vous ne pouvez vous rendre sur place que du 1er juin au 31 mars (et non du 1er avril au 30 mai, période de reproduction des animaux).

Le ponton de départ de la Senne (50°45'56.8 "N 4°16'46.9 "E) se trouve sous un pont près du 9 Zennestraat à Lot. Il y a une sorte de parking devant la maison de cette adresse. Une autre adresse avec un vrai parking public est Dworpsestraat 38, 1651 Beersel près de la fritkot (baraque à frites) nommée Welkom bij Mama (Bienvenue chez maman). De là, laissez votre véhicule, portez votre équipement en suivant la rivière en aval sur la droite, vous marchez dans l'herbe, derrière quelques maisons et terminez sur un sentier jusqu'au ponton. C'est un parcours facile et sécurisé d'un peu plus de 300 mètres.

Le ponton de Senne à la fin (50°47'21.3 "N 4°18'44.2 "E) est situé dans la commune de Drogenbos sur la route Grote baan (près du n° 302) près de Het moeras Natuurgebied (la réserve naturelle des marais). C'est aussi à 150m du supermarché ALDI si vous avez besoin d'un parking.

L'accès est gratuit (2023) mais vous devez enregistrer votre voyage (scannez le code QR BLEU). Il s'agit principalement de statistiques permettant aux autorités de savoir si cet itinéraire fluvial est utilisé et de planifier l'entretien en conséquence. NL: Sinds afgelopen zondag is het nu mogelijk en publiek toegankelijk om te peddelen (kajak, kano, packraft...) op de Zenne in Brussel. Eigenlijk in Vlaanderen aan de grens. Er is een ponton aan het begin en het einde en je mag alleen tussen deze twee pontons varen. De afstand is 6,3 km en het is aan te raden om 2 uur de tijd te nemen om te peddelen en van de rivier te genieten.

Daarvandaan laat je je auto achter en volg je de rivier stroomafwaarts aan de rechterkant, je loopt in het gras, achter een paar huizen en eindigt op een pad naar het ponton. Het is allemaal veilig en gemakkelijk en iets meer dan 300 meter lopen.

Kungsleden trail unsupported and human powered

EN: In the past 10 days I came with an idea of a new small expedition for this August. In short I want to do the famous Kungsleden trail in Sweden. But of course on my way: fully unsupported and I plan to packraft all lakes. A journey of over 500km. That is including the iconic Skierfe Mountain (apparently one of the best nature lookout in Sweden) and the Kebnekaise North climb (highest point in Sweden)

I haven't found anyone who did it. Well a failed attempt in 2020. There's no Kungsleden entry in the logs for "official routes" used for speed records.

FR: Ces dix derniers jours, j'ai eu l'idée d'une nouvelle petite expédition pour le mois d'août. En bref, je veux faire le célèbre sentier Kungsleden en Suède. Mais bien sûr à ma façon: sans assistance et je prévois de faire du packraft sur tous les lacs. Un voyage de plus de 500km. Cela inclut l'emblématique montagne Skierfe (apparemment l'un des meilleurs points de vue sur la nature en Suède) et l'ascension du nord Kebnekaise (le point le plus élevé de Suède).

Je n'ai trouvé personne qui l'ait fait. Eh bien une tentative ratée en 2020. Il n'y a pas d'entrée dans les registres du Kungsleden pour les "routes officielles" utilisées pour les records de vitesse.

KayaClean CSR Corporate Community day

EN: The Jane Goodall Institute Belgium organized another KayaClean (part of the Roots and Shoots program) action with a corporate company. I was present to lead and explain how the action started, why it was important and safety guidelines. The sun was present and participants did an excellent job, a real clean-up army! They clearly experienced the fact that removing trash out of the water isn't an easy task and that we only see the tip of the iceberg when paddling a river like the Lesse. It's when you approach the bank river and look closely that you find all the small trash lying in the mud or in shallow water. Trash is even found hanging in the trees. 

FR: Le Jane Goodall Institute Belgique a organisé une autre action KayaClean  (fait partie du prgramme Roots and Shoots) avec une société. J'étais présent pour mener, expliquer la génèse de l'action, pourquoi c'est important et des règles de sécurité. Le soleil était au rendez-vous et les participants ont fait un excellent travail, une vraie armée de nettoyeurs! Ils ont pu clairement expérimenter le fait que retirer des déchets de l'eau n'est pas une opération facile et quo'n ne voit que le sommet de l'iceberg lorsqu'on pagaie une rivière comme la Lesse. C'est en approchant les berges et en regardant attentivement qu'on trouve les petits déchets cachés dans la boue ou en eau peu profonde. On trouve même des déchets accrochés en haut de branches.

Kayak for the right to Live

EN: Three years ago, I heard about French-Canadian Georges ALEXANDRE who started kayaking from Tunisia to Brussels. His journey was 3700km long by Lampedusa, Malta, Italia, the rivers and canals of France and Belgium to Brussels. I joined him for the last 4km of kayak in Brussels then we walked for 7,85 km across Brussels with the kayak passing the Midi Station, Manneken Pis, the Grand Place, the Royal Palace until the European parliament. Arriving at 5pm, Georges entered and asked where he could deliver his petition for a better management of European immigration. He wants also a human handling of the people in the "immigration welcome center" like in Lampedusa.

FR: Il y a trois ans, j'entendais parler du Franco-Canadien Georges ALEXANDRE qui était parti en kayak de Tunisie pour arriver à Bruxelles. Son périple de 3700km en passant par Lampedusa, Malte, l'Italie, les rivières et canaux de France et Belgique l'a mené à bon port à Bruxelles. J'ai pagayé les derniers 4 kms avec lui et ensuite je l'ai guidé sur 7,85 kms dans les rues de Bruxelles en passant par la gare du Midi, Manneken Pis, la Grand Place, le palais Royal jusqu'au parlement Européen. Arrivé à 17h, Georges est entré et a demandé ou il pouvait remettre sa pétition demandant une meilleure gestion des flux migratoires en Europe et surtout d'un traitement plus humain des personnes dans les centres de rétention comme à Lampédusa.

New kayak and new clean-up action

 

 

EN: I went North of Amsterdam to the Arjan Bloem kayak shop. They nearly store 2000 kayaks so there was a lot to see. I bought a second hand river wild water kayak. I tested it back in Brussels in the canals and took the opportunity to do 1km of clean up. I collected all kind of trash but mainly plastic bottles and tetrapacks.

FR: J'ai été au Nord d'Amsterdam chez Arjan Bloem. Ils stockent pas loin de 2000 kayaks et il y a beaucoup à voir. J'ai acheté un kayak d'eau vive de seconde main. Je l'ai testé à Bruxelles dans le canal et j'ai nettoyé 1km de berge. J'ai amassé de tout mais surtout des bouteilles en plastique et des tétrapacks.

Mark Kalch and Usain Bolt

EN: I caught up with Aussie-Austrian Mark Kalch living currently in Buenos Aires. We talked for 4 hours about previous and future kayak expeditions, adventurers and how we both try to get a little bit of the sponsoring cake to get us to the next expedition. Conclusion is that it's still very hard to find decent sponsors, especially cash even if we both do (what we believe) genuine interesting expeditions. But none of us will quit our passion! And when I went back to my hostel, I just passed through a crowd and saw a sweaty Usain Bolt with just his guards between me and him. Not a bad day.

FR: J'ai revu l'Australien-Autrichien Mark Kalsh qui vit actuellement à Buenos Aires. Nous avons discuté pendant 4 heures de nos expéditions passées et futures en kayak, des aventuriers et de comment on essaye d'attrapper un petit morceau du cake du sponsoring permettant de faire notre prochaine expédition.  En conclusion, cela reste difficile de trouver des du sponsoring décent, surtout en cash même si nous faisons (notre avis) des expéditions intéressantes et authentiques. Mais on ne quittera pas notre passion pour autant! Ensuite sur le retour vers mon auberge, je suis passé à travers un foule de gens et je me suis retrouvé à 2 mètres de Usain Bolt qui suait encore de sa course. Il était entouré de ses gardes. Pas un mauvaise journée!

Rio Marañon Rafting and Kayaking

EN: I'm just back from a 1 week trip rafting and river kayaking down the upper part of the Marañon river. The trip if the first ever guided trip on the river, done by SierraRios led by Rocky Contos. Seeing the beauty of the "Grand Canyon of the Andes" was amazing. I also found myself between a rock and a hard place after a wrong decision I took and was saved from drowning in the rapids. The expedition also focus on telling the local people about the project to dam the river with up to 20 dams. This would bring a lot of electrical power to Peru to be sold to Chile and Brasil mainly but according to specialists, the study didn't involve the local population and study much of the negative ecological impacts. More info can be found about the trip here and how to learn and save rio Marañon here (+ video and petition). For the moment I'm in Lima and sick but getting well.

FR: Je suis revenu d'une semaine de rafting et de kayak de rivière sur le fleuve Marañon. C'est la première descente guidée de cette rivière réalisée par SierraRios menée par Rocky Contos. Voir la beauté du "Grand Canyon des Andes" était superbe. J'ai appris beaucoup et surtour lorsque j'ai commis une erreur et j'ai été sauvé de la noyade dans les rapides. L'expédition vise aussi à expliquer à la population locale le projet de construction de barrages (jusqu'à 20), ce qui donnerait beaucoup d'éléecticité au Pérou à revendre au Chili et au Brésil. Mais selon les ONG, l'étude du projet n'a pas tenu compte des populations et de tous les impacts environnementaux négatifs.Plus sur l'expédition est ici et pour en apprendre plus et comment sauver le Rio Marañon ici. Pour le moment je suis à Lima, malade mais je vais mieux.

Sep26: Everyone is in Lima; rendezvous in Miraflores at Friend's House and Chris Meyer's house.

Sep27: Depart Lima; large bus for everyone plus smaller combi "Sprinter" for the gear.  We get out by 9 am and are in Chavin after dusk (7 pm). We had to get an additional pickup to lighten the load on the dirt roads near Chavin. Hotel paid for in Chavin for everyone.

Sep28 (Day1) 0 km. Leave Chavin at 7:30 am; ruins not open until 9am, so we miss them. We arrive to river a little after noon - gated access to put-in now so I pay the owners for it now and will do so in the future. Rigging most of afternoon. River is low - about 50 cms/1600 cfs.  About 6 kayakers go up and run the 6 km class III-IV section from P.Copuma to put-in point.  We camp at put-in.  Pasta dinner.

Sep29 (Day2) 25 km; class III-IV.  Finish rigging. Leave a few items at casa nearby. Enga and others give safety talk. At first class III Neil gets heavy cataraft stuck on a rock, but soon wiggles off.  All seems to go well otherwise here and in Jata (first IV) which several folks elect not to row (Julio and I row several rafts through). Yesojirca Narrows are easily passed with kayaks off the rafts.  We camp a little ways down on RL.  Camp km 25 RL. Steak/salmon dinner.

Sep30 (Day3) 33 km; class III-IV.  Some III in morning. Hike Q. Huanapampa to nice narrows and little falls/climbs. Bruce got ahead and misses lunch there. Pass Rio Yanamayo - two channels a bit of branches to avoid.  Pauca is more like a IV according to some. We scout Pachachin (III-IV) high on RL which reveals easier raft route in RR channel.  Camp km 58 RR. Kebab dinner.

Oct1 (Day4) 29 km; class III-IV. Several folks feeling GI problems (Suzy, Steve, Bruce are bad - two take cipro; John, Glenn, Joe not good).  Q. Sachachin hike in morning across river - very nice milky white water and walk under boulders to falls.  Good class III section to start - some II-III after. Meet guy on side who gives us bananas just upstream of our lunch spot. Lou-Phi kayaks but flips in a III and gets banged up on swim. Late in day we all go into Shapalmonte (IV) without side scouting - rafts get thrown to center & RR. Lou-Phi jumps off cataraft and hit wall by raft.  Camp is smaller than I thought but folks frazzled and it's late. A bit of rain at night - river gets some silt that clears later.  Camp km 87 RR (small). Pasta dinner (Lacey).

Oct2 (Day5) 29 km; class III. Lots of IIIs today. Pass Huacrachuco and stop briefly. See USA/Peruvian dam survey crew at Puente Jitaraxan - flow is 68 cms.  Peter is not there so I arrange a message to get to him to meet us at the hot springs downstream.  Enter beautiful canyon section and camp at ideal big beach before Cañas.  Camp km 116 RL.  Tamale dinner. 

Oct3 (Day6) 18 km; class III.  Day starts with stop at Q.Cañas - awesome short side hike like GCC. Stop late morning at fallen bridge and go up to Huchus since invited by villagers. Lunch here or snacks only.  Spend 2+ hrs here.  Downstream, great surf wave below R.Actuy. Make it to Aguas Termales and camp. Folks generally against layover here but it rains later and several change their mind.   Camp km 134 RL. Panang curry dinner.

EN: Gadiel and I made it! World first tour of lake Titicaca by kayak. It ook us 38 days to cover about 1100km. We have 9 hours of film rush, 1900 photos with 979 GPS points and 90 underwater photos to locate better the endangered Titicaca frog. ES: Gadiel y yo lo hicimos! Primera mundial recorrido por el lago Titicaca en kayak. Hemos remando durante 38 días para cubrir alrededor de 1.100 kilometros. Tenemos 9 horas de película, 1900 fotos con 979 puntos de GPS y 90 fotos bajo el agua para ubicar mejor la rana del Titicaca en peligro. Back to Peru

EN: After a week in Bolivia, we spent very hard days to do out job: taking underwater photography to locate better the habitat of the endangered lake Titicaca freshwater frog, take GPS points to the coastline and photos of the landscapes. We met only one person who had seen a kayak before. The 3 most frequently asked questions were:

1) You don't have an engine in your kayak boat ?

2) How much is it, can I buy it ?

3) Don't you capsize in the water with the waves ?

Today we were lucky to be invited to pass the night in the hotel of the SUASI island. WIFI, buffet, hot shower and nice bed. And best of all, our gear that spent 26 days in customs in Lima, got to Puno and from Puno a direct boat with tourists to the island. We now have carbon fiber paddles (thanks to SELECT), from 5 USD repaired sunglasses to super polarized sunglasses (thanks JULBO) and from PowerTraveller we received our Powermonkeys gear (solar panels and batteries). I also bought a Katadyn waterfilter to get more water from the lake as we enter remote places with large polluted river (Thanks Dad, I owe you money... again). No reason to fail as we have excellent gear now!

ES: Después de una semana en Bolivia, pasamos días muy dificil para trabajar: tomar la fotografía submarina para localizar mejor el hábitat de la rana del lago Titicaca de agua dulce, tomar puntos GPS de la costa y las fotos de los paisajes. Encontramos una sola persona que había visto un kayak antes. Las 3 preguntas más frecuentes han sido:
1) No hay motor en el kayak?
2) ¿Cuánto cuesta, ¿puedo comprarlo?
3) ¿No se da vuelta con las olas?
Hoy tuvimos la suerte de ser invitado a pasar la noche en el hotel de la isla SUASI. WIFI, buffet, ducha caliente y una buena cama. Y lo mejor de todo nuestro equipo que pasó 26 días en la aduana en Lima, llegó a Puno y de Puno con un barco directo con los turistas a la isla. Ahora tenemos palas de fibra de carbono (gracias a SELECT), pasamos de 5 dolares gafas reparadas hasta gafas de sol polarizadas (gracias JULBO) y de PowerTraveller recibimos nuestro equipo Powermonkeys (paneles solares y baterías). También compré un Katadyn (filtrar agua) para obtener más agua del lago porque vamos a entrar en lugares remotos con un grandes ríos contaminados (Gracias papá, te deben dinero ... otra vez). No hay razón para dejar que tenemos un excelente equipo ahora!

Lago Menor Bolivia

EN: It took us a bit more than 1 week to go around the lake minor (the part fully in Bolivia). It was very hard and cold. We received news of abnormal cold weather and indeed our kayaks, tents, water and feet got frozen every day. Yesterday we were back in the detroit of Tiquina. We slept in the army barracks and I got the privilege to dive in lake Titicaca (3800m) to -6m with low visibility but I saw many frogs. Happy. We are tired, muscles are sore but the spirits are high. We just resupplied with normally enough food to complete the expedition in a bit more than 2 weeks. Even if halfway, the rest of the distance seems "easier". We we often blocked or lost in a jungle of Totora plants. It took us hours to get out or just to get to the shore to take one GPS point. An area of 200km2 of Totora was unpassable according to the locals so we didn't enter as it was going to be dark, so we headed for an island 7km away. We even got escorted in the dark by a local in his motorboat of the 100 people island. We are amazed people have never seen a kayak before. Even two 14 year old kids had never seen a white man and found it funny I had hair on my arms.

ES:Nos tomó un poco más de 1 semana para dar la vuelta al lago menor (la parte plenamente en Bolivia). Fue muy duro y frío. Hemos recibido la noticia de frío anormal y de hecho nuestros kayaks, tiendas de campaña, agua y los pies congelados dieron todos los días. Ayer estábamos de regreso en el Detroit de Tiquina. Dormimos en los cuarteles del ejército y me dieron el privilegio de sumergirse en el lago Titicaca (3800m) a 6m con baja visibilidad pero vimos muchas ranas. Feliz. Estamos cansados​​, los músculos están doloridos, pero los espíritus son altos. Acabamos reabastecidos con normalidad alimentos suficientes para completar la expedición de un poco más de 2 semanas. Incluso si a mitad de camino, el resto de la distancia parece "más fácil". Nosotros a menudo nos bloqueamos o perdidos en una selva de plantas de totora. Un área de 200km2 de Totora era infranqueable según los lugareños, así que no entramos, ya que iba a ser oscuro, así que se dirigió hacia una isla 7 km. EN: We are back in Bolivia after a 2,5 days in Peru. Yes, the borders are everywhere. We had a bad evening trying to find a camp as we were lost in a maze of mud and totora plant, all in total darkness. We went to bed cold but not wet. Internet will become harder so news will probably be posted by friends at the South American Explorers as we will all them to make the updates. So no photos yet.

Pomata and Storm

EN: We spent time with the extreme sport people of Pomata, they built their own kayaks and followed us for a bit until the storm hit us all while we were following a cliff so impossible to land on shore for 2 hours. Yesterday we also got hit by heavy winds and rain and has to stop after a few hours of paddling. Today the weather wasn't great and we followed the coast on foot and will do the border paperwork. Tomorrow an early start into Bolivia. This afternoon, the sun is back!

ES: Pasamos tiempo con los deportistas extremos de Pomata, construyeron sus propios kayaks y nos siguieron durante un rato hasta que la tormenta nos golpeó a la vez que cumplimos con un precipicio tan imposible aterrizar en tierra durante 2 horas. Ayer también fue golpeada por los fuertes vientos y la lluvia y tiene que parar después de unas horas de remar.
