Exhibitions at the Australian Museum in Sydney

 

 

EN: In Sydney, while preparing my new expedition, I saw the the Australian Museum had 2 great exhibitions like Thin Ice VR about Shackleton and the 2023 Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year. So I went. The VR film features Tim Jarvis whom I met at the GLEX summit in Portugal in 2019.

According to legend, Shackleton posted several ads in a London paper stating 'Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in case of success.' This has never been confirmed but the words, in retrospect, were prophetic. We do know that Shackleton recieved about 5000 applications. At 10.30 am on 26 October 1914, the Endurance set sail from Buenos Aires with 27 men, and a yet-to-be-discovered stowaway, onboard. They wouldn't see South America again for nearly two years. 

FR: A Sydney, en préparant ma nouvelle expédition, j'ai vu que l'Australian Museum avait 2 grandes expositions comme Thin Ice VR sur Shackleton et l'Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year 2023. Alors j'y suis allé. Le film VR met en scène Tim Jarvis que j'ai rencontré au sommet GLEX au Portugal en 2019.

Selon la légende, Shackleton aurait publié plusieurs annonces dans un journal londonien : "Hommes recherchés pour un voyage dangereux. Faibles salaires, longues heures dans l'obscurité totale. Retour incertain. Honneur et reconnaissance en cas de succès". Cette information n'a jamais été confirmée mais, rétrospectivement, ces mots étaient prophétiques. Nous savons que Shackleton a reçu environ 5 000 candidatures. Le 26 octobre 1914, à 10h30, l'Endurance quitte Buenos Aires avec à son bord 27 hommes et un passager clandestin qui n'a pas encore été découvert. Ils ne reverront pas l'Amérique du Sud pendant près de deux ans. 

Omer Huyse - Expo Nos Héros du Vélo à Mouscron

   

EN: In my hometown of Mouscron, there's an exhibition about our local cycling heroes including Omer Huyse who won the longest stage of the Tour de France ever (it was in 1924)

FR: Dans ma ville natale de Mouscron, il y a une exposition sur nos héros cyclistes locaux, dont Omer Huyse qui a remporté la plus longue étape du Tour de France de tous les temps (c'était en 1924). C'est jusqu'au 15 Septembre au musée du Folklore.

To the Antarctic - Belgica's polar pioneers

 

EN: I visited the superb exhibition about the Belgian expedition to Antarctica on the La Belgica ship. It's to be visiter in Antwerp at the MAS museum until November. Consider you need 2 hours to visit it because there is a lot to read and videos to watch. Hundreds of photos and artifacts are showcased.

Did you know Roald Amundsen and Frederick Cook were on board ? But the leader was Adrien de Gerlache. The ship got stuck in the ice and they made the first overwintering in Antarctica. The entire crew is legendary.  A lot of science and discovery were made.

EN : J'ai visité la superbe exposition sur l'expédition belge en Antarctique à bord du navire La Belgica. Elle est à visiter à Anvers au musée MAS jusqu'en novembre. Il faut compter deux heures pour la visiter, car il y a beaucoup de choses à lire et de vidéos à regarder. Des centaines de photos et d'objets sont exposés.

Saviez-vous que Roald Amundsen et Frederick Cook étaient à bord ? Mais le chef de file était Adrien de Gerlache. Le navire est resté bloqué dans la glace et ils ont effectué le premier hivernage en Antarctique. Tout l'équipage est légendaire.  Beaucoup de sciences et de découvertes ont été faites.

Titanic exhibition

EN: Almost year ago, the Titan submersible was lost in the Atlantic while diving to the Titanic with 5 people inside. Two members of the explorers club were among them including Hamish Harding and Paul-Henri Nargeolet, who was one of the most respected explorer of the Titanic ship wreck. The exhibition I just saw here in Brussels showed some of the thousands of artifacts that have been collected.

FR: Il y a presque un an, le submersible Titan était perdu dans l'Atlantique alors qu'il plongeait vers le Titanic avec 5 personnes à l'intérieur. Deux membres du club des explorateurs en faisaient partie, à savoir Hamish Harding et Paul-Henri Nargeolet, l'un des explorateurs les plus respectés de l'épave du Titanic. L'exposition que je viens de voir ici à Bruxelles présentait quelques-uns des milliers d'artefacts qui ont été collectés.

Belgian Antarctic Expedition with the Belgica

  

EN: 125 years ago, a (the first) belgian scientific expedition made the first overwintering in Antarctica. Led by Adrien De Gerlache on the Belgica ship the international team was thought lost and they all came back as heroes in Antwerp. The exhibition lists the team and showcases items from the expedition. Other 2 young explorers on board who later became famous were Frederick Cook and Roald Amundsen.

FR: Il y a 125 ans, une (première) expédition scientifique belge a effectué le premier hivernage en Antarctique. Dirigée par Adrien De Gerlache sur le Belgica, l'équipe internationale était considérée comme perdue, mais elle est revenue en héros à Anvers. L'exposition dresse la liste de l'équipe et présente des objets de l'expédition. Les deux autres jeunes explorateurs à bord qui sont devenus célèbres plus tard sont Frederick Cook et Roald Amundsen.

 

Friedrichshafen Outdoor Show Blogger

EN: In less than two weeks I'm in Friedrichshafen to visit the fair as usual and this time I'll also be there as official blogger. My aim is to connect, share news about products and interview & Meet Explorers and Adventurers.

FR: Dans moins de deux semaines je serai à Friedrichshafen pour visiter la foire et cette fois aussi je serai bloggeur officiel. Mon objectif est de faire des contacts, partager les nouveaux produits et interviewer des explorateurs et aventuriers.

Paris National Geographic Exhibition - Christian Clot Adaptation

 

EN: I had a busy day in Paris. An interview at TV5monde and a visit to the exhibition of National Geographics. Then I went to visit my psychology-scientist to discuss the next steps in "Decision taking under stress in extreme environment" and ended the evening with the presentation of the expedition ADAPTATION of Christian Clot where my friend Jeremy Roumian (Outdoor shop Tribu Outdoor) is leading the operations. Happy to catch up a bit with adventurers / friends.

FR: J'ai eu une journée très dense à Paris. Une interview à TV5monde et une visite de l'exposition du National Geographics. Puis, j'ai discuté avec ma psy-scientifique les étapes suivantes du projet "Prise de décision sous stress en environnement extrême" et une soirée relax à la présentation de l'expédition ADAPTATION de Christian Clot où j'ai revu mon ami Jéremy Roumian qui est directeur des Opérations. Heureux de revoir des amis / aventuriers.

EN: I went this weekend at the adventure travel show for the 4th time and second time speaking. I've met with a few adventurer-friends and made new ones. I was very surprised and happy to meet Edurne Pasaban. We had a quick chat and are surely on the same wave.

FR: J'ai été ce weekend à Londres à l'Adventure Travel show pour la 4ème fois et 2ème fois en tant que speaker. J'ai revu quelques amis aventuriers et fait de nouvelles connaissances. J'étais très surpris et content de tomber sur Edurne Pasaban. Nous avons eu une brève conversation et nous sommes clairement sur la même onde porteuse.

EN: I'm spending every evening at the BANFF in Brussels. Thursday I'll be in the room watching the films otherwise I wait if people have questions.

I'll go back to the Simpson desert this summer

FR: Je passe chaque soir au BANFF à Bruxelles. Jeudi je regarderai les films sinon je surveille et je demande aux curieux s'ils ont des questions.

Je retournerai au désert de Simpson cet été.

Salon des Vacances

EN: I went to the Holiday Fair in Brussels. It's mainly tourism of course but there is always a surprise around the corner. I met Ingrid and Nicole who did 3 long cycling journeys over 20 years and young photographer Johan Lolos who shows some large prints of his portfolio, mostly New Zealand. Gotta go back to this country.

FR: Je reviens du salon des vacances de Bruxelles. C'est évidemment du tourisme mais il y a toujours une surprise à découvrir. Comme Nicole et Ingrid qui ont fait 3 grands voyages à vélo sur plus de 20 ans et le jeune photographe Johan Lolos qui expose des grands clichés de son portfolio, principalement Nouvelle Zélande. Faut que je retourne dans ce pays.

EN: Another year at ISPO Munich, the outdoor fair. I met my sponsors of Death Valley and had a look at everything related to 360 degree content. Also met for the second time Léa Brassy and Vincent Colliard, the adventure cold-surfing couple. I was happy to see the PANONO team and I soon I'll get this 360 degree camera for expeditions.

FR: Et une année de plus à ISPO à Munich, la foire outdoor. J'y ai rencontré mes sponsors de la Vallée de la Mort et je me suis intéressé au produits 360 degrés. J'ai revu Léa Brassy et Vincent Colliard, le couple aventuriers et surfeurs en eaux froides. J'étais content de voir que l'équipe de PANONO était présente et j'attend de pourvoir utiliser ma camera en expéditions.

EN: I was in Paris on the Seine. I couldn't visit La Boudeuse but I was allowed to visit the inside of TARA. I took spherical 360 degrees photos of it. First times I was TARA in 2009 and 2008. I then went to the Salon du Nautique Paris (also in 2014, 2009 and 2008) and saw la Louloute 2 of Yvan Bourgnon, the Pilot Fish Submarine prototype and talked to Nicolas Jarossay who will attempt crossing the Atlantic on SUP next month. Friday morning I went to visit Rémi Bricka, the singer, orchestra-man and adventurer. I'll write the account of the interview on MeetExplorers.

FR: J'étais à Paris sur la Seine. Je n'ai pas pu visiter La Boudeuse mais j'ai été autorisé à visiter l'intérieur de TARA. J'en ai pris des photos sphériques 360 degrés. J'avais déjà vu TARA en 2009 et 2008. J'ai ensuite été au Salon du Nautique Paris (aussi en 2014, 2009 et 2008) et j'ai vu la Louloute 2 d'Yvan Bourgnon, le prototype sousmarin Pilot Fish et j'ai discuté avec Nicolas Jarossay qui va tenter de traverser l'Atlantique en SUP le mois prochain. Vendredi matin j'ai rendu visite à Rémi Bricka, le chanteur, homme-orchestre et aventurier. Je vais écrire l'interview sur MeetExplorers.
