Paddle the Senne river in Brussels

 

 

 

EN: Since last Sunday it is now possible and publicly open to paddle (kayak, canoe, packraft...) on the Senne river in Brussels. Actually in the Flanders at the border, so it's called the Zenne river.

There is a pontoon at the start and end and you are only allowed to navigate between these two pontoons. The distance is 6.3 km and it is recommended to have 2 hours to paddle and enjoy the river.

The Senne Start pontoon (50°45'56.8"N 4°16'46.9"E) is below a bridge near 9 Zennestraat in Lot. There is some sort of parking in front of the house of this address. Another address with a real public parking is Dworpsestraat 38, 1651 Beersel near the fritkot (french fries house) named Welkom bij Mama (Welcome to mama). From there leave your vehicle, carry you equipment following the river downstream on the right, you walk in the grass, behind some houses and end on a path to the pontoon. It's all safe and easy and just over 300m walk.

The Senne End pontoon (50°47'21.3"N 4°18'44.2"E) is located in the commune of Drogenbos on the Grote baan (near n° 302) road near Het moeras Natuurgebied (the Swamp Nature Reserve). This is also 150m from the ALDI supermarket if you need a parking.

It is free (2023) to paddle but you must register your trip (scan the BLUE QR code). This is mainly for statistics for the authorities to understand if this river route is used and plan any maintenance accordingly I guess. FR: Depuis dimanche dernier, il est possible et autorisé de pagayer (kayak, canoë, packraft...) sur la Senne à Bruxelles. En fait, il s'agit de la rivière Zenne, située à la frontière de la Flandre.

Il y a un ponton au départ et à l'arrivée et vous ne pouvez naviguer qu'entre ces deux pontons. La distance est de 6,3 km et il est recommandé de disposer de 2 heures pour pagayer et profiter de la rivière.

Le ponton de départ de la Senne (50°45'56.8 "N 4°16'46.9 "E) se trouve sous un pont près du 9 Zennestraat à Lot. Il y a une sorte de parking devant la maison de cette adresse. Une autre adresse avec un vrai parking public est Dworpsestraat 38, 1651 Beersel près de la fritkot (baraque à frites) nommée Welkom bij Mama (Bienvenue chez maman). De là, laissez votre véhicule, portez votre équipement en suivant la rivière en aval sur la droite, vous marchez dans l'herbe, derrière quelques maisons et terminez sur un sentier jusqu'au ponton. C'est un parcours facile et sécurisé d'un peu plus de 300 mètres.

Le ponton de Senne à la fin (50°47'21.3 "N 4°18'44.2 "E) est situé dans la commune de Drogenbos sur la route Grote baan (près du n° 302) près de Het moeras Natuurgebied (la réserve naturelle des marais). C'est aussi à 150m du supermarché ALDI si vous avez besoin d'un parking.

L'accès est gratuit (2023) mais vous devez enregistrer votre voyage (scannez le code QR BLEU). Il s'agit principalement de statistiques permettant aux autorités de savoir si cet itinéraire fluvial est utilisé et de planifier l'entretien en conséquence. Er is een ponton aan het begin en het einde en je mag alleen tussen deze twee pontons varen. De afstand is 6,3 km en het is aan te raden om 2 uur de tijd te nemen om te peddelen en van de rivier te genieten.

Het startponton van de Zenne (50°45'56.8"N 4°16'46.9"E) ligt onder een brug bij de Zennestraat 9 in Lot. Er is een soort parkeerplaats voor het huis van dit adres. Een ander adres met een echte openbare parkeerplaats is Dworpsestraat 38, 1651 Beersel vlakbij de fritkot met de naam Welkom bij Mama. Daarvandaan laat je je auto achter en volg je de rivier stroomafwaarts aan de rechterkant, je loopt in het gras, achter een paar huizen en eindigt op een pad naar het ponton. Het is allemaal veilig en gemakkelijk en iets meer dan 300 meter lopen.

Het ponton Zenne op het einde (50°47'21.3"N 4°18'44.2"E) ligt in de gemeente Drogenbos aan de Grote baan (ter hoogte van nr. 302) bij Het moeras Natuurgebied. Dit is ook 150m van de ALDI supermarkt als je een parkeerplaats nodig hebt.

Het is gratis (2023) om te peddelen, maar je moet je tocht registreren (scan de BLAUWE QR-code). Dit is vooral voor statistieken voor de autoriteiten om te begrijpen of deze rivierroute wordt gebruikt en om eventueel onderhoud dienovereenkomstig te plannen, denk ik. Deep Climate and Deep Time expeditions

 
EN: In Paris there was an exhibition by the Human Adaptation Institute led by Swiss-French explorer Christian Clot. The team just finished a few days ago the Deep Climate expedition started last December. The 10 women and 10 men spent each time 40 days crossing respectively 3 extreme terrains in the jungle, in cold Lapland and in a desert in Saudi Arabia. In 2019 they spent 40 days in the cave of Lombrives for the Deep Time expedition.

FR: À Paris, une exposition a été organisée par l'Institut de l'adaptation humaine, dirigé par l'explorateur franco-suisse Christian Clot. L'équipe vient de terminer il y a quelques jours l'expédition Deep Climate commencée en décembre dernier. Les 10 femmes et 10 hommes ont passé chacun 40 jours à traverser respectivement 3 terrains extrêmes dans la jungle, dans le froid de la Laponie et dans un désert d'Arabie Saoudite. En 2019, ils ont passé 40 jours dans la grotte de Lombrives pour l'expédition Deep Time.

 

 

Raphael Domjan and SolarStratos in Paris

 

EN: After the Giraffe, I went to the Bourget to meet Raphael Domjan and the SolarStratos. I hope he'll fly soon to 16km high with only electricity and the power of the sun.

Also present is "Des Ailes pour la Planète" (Wings for the Planet) is Jean-Baptiste Loiselet's "zero-impact" round-the-world tour of France in August 2022, with a glider he developed himself that uses only wind and sun to power it.

I then had a drink with Stéphane Dugast and picked up my 2 signed copies of his book on the famous polar ship L'Astrolabe (ISBN 978-2851209368).

FR: Après la Girafe, je suis allé au Bourget pour rencontrer Raphael Domjan et le SolarStratos. J'espère qu'il volera bientôt à 16 km de haut avec seulement de l'électricité et la puissance du soleil.

Présent au salon, "Des Ailes pour la Planète" c'est le tour de tour de France "zéro impact" de Jean-Baptiste Loiselet réalisé en Août 2022, avec un planeur n'utilisant que du vent et du soleil pour fonctionner, qu'il a mis au point lui-même.

J'ai ensuite été boire un pot avec Stéphane Dugast et récupérer mes 2 copies achetées et signées de son livre sur le fameux navire polaire L'Astrolabe (ISBN 978-2851209368). 

Sebastian Mayer walks as Girafe to Paris

 

EN: I was a client of Sebastian Mayer in 2014 when I bought 100 Chimpanzee masks for the Jane Goodall Institute. I drove to London to get them, met his mum but he was in France. Finally today we meet as the puppet maker finished a walking adventure from Marseille to Paris. He re-enacted the walk of 1826 of Zarafa, the first giraffe of France. He make a cardboard and carbon animated giraffe he carried on his shoulders for the entire walk. A documentary film will be made on his journey.

FR: J'ai été client de Sebastian Mayer en 2014 lorsque j'ai acheté 100 masques de chimpanzé pour l'Institut Jane Goodall. J'ai roulé jusqu'à Londres pour les récupérer, j'ai rencontré sa maman mais il était en France. Enfin aujourd'hui, nous nous rencontrons car ce créateur de marionnettes a terminé une aventure à pied de Marseille à Paris. Il a reconstitué la marche de 1826 de Zarafa, la première girafe de France. Il a fabriqué un girafe en carton et en carbone animé qu'il a porté sur ses épaules pendant toute la durée de la marche. Un film documentaire sera réalisé sur son périple.

Polar photographer Christian Clauwers at the Senate

EN: I was invited to the lecture of Belgian photographer Christian Clauwers at the Belgian Senate. He had a small exhibition and lectured about his recent work in the arctic.

FR: J'ai été invitée à la conférence du photographe belge Christian Clauwers au Sénat belge. Il a présenté une petite exposition et a donné une conférence sur son travail récent dans l'Arctique.

Photos of the rarest orchid rediscovered

 

EN: It was the morning of day 2 crossing the Island of Sao Jorge by foot from West to East. I had just reached (very easy) the summit of the island Pico da Esperança and resumed my hike, the weather was foggy and humid. I saw a car parked on the road with a man coming back to it. His T-shirt said "VUB (Vrije Universiteit Brussel)" so I asked if he was Belgian and what he was doing in a parked in a place with nothing to see. He is a orchid fan and told me quickly the famous botanist Richard Bateman from the Kew Gardens in London. In short an orchid (named Platanthera azorica) that was first discovered/documented in 1838 was thought to be extinct and 2013 Bateman and other botanists had rediscovered it on Sao Jorge and Faial islands. The flower is of course endemic (only found there) and according to the paper it is "arguably Europe's rarest orchid". The belgian guy had spotted a few specimens higher on the steep grassy wall and asked me to climb and take photos of it. I was happy I could help this orchid fan and probably the first Belgian to take a photo of the rarest orchid of Europe... by complete chance. My advice: never stop being curious and talk to people.

FR: C'était le matin du deuxième jour de la traversée à pied de l'île de Sao Jorge d'ouest en est. Je venais d'atteindre (très facile) le sommet de l'île Pico da Esperança et je reprenais ma marche, le temps était brumeux et humide. J'ai vu une voiture garée sur la route avec un homme qui revenait vers elle. Son T-shirt indiquait "VUB (Vrije Universiteit Brussel)", je lui ai donc demandé s'il était belge et ce qu'il faisait garé dans un endroit où il n'y avait rien à voir. Il est fan d'orchidées et m'a parlé rapidement du célèbre botaniste Richard Bateman du Kew Gardens à Londres. En bref, une orchidée (appelée Platanthera azorica), découverte et documentée pour la première fois en 1838, était considérée comme éteinte et, en 2011 Bateman et d'autres botanistes l'ont redécouverte sur les îles de Sao Jorge et de Faial. La fleur est bien sûr endémique (on ne la trouve que là) et, selon le journal, c'est "sans doute l'orchidée la plus rare d'Europe". Le Belge avait repéré quelques spécimens plus haut sur le mur herbeux escarpé et m'a demandé de grimper et de prendre des photos. J'étais heureux de pouvoir aider ce fan d'orchidées et probablement le premier Belge à prendre une photo de l'orchidée la plus rare d'Europe... par le plus grand des hasards. Mon conseil : ne jamais cesser d'être curieux et de parler aux gens.

Azores hikes in Pico, Faial and Sao Jorge

  

  

  

  

EN: In the Azores for the GLEX summit but also to train by doing as many walks as possible. I've done the tiny PR05 Vinhas da Criação Velha on Pico island (6.9km), the GR01 Coast to Coast (36.8km) and PRC08 Entre Montes (3,4km) on Faial island and the long GR01+GR02 SJO (92km), the West-East traverse of Sao Jorge island.

FR: Aux Açores pour le sommet GLEX mais aussi pour m'entraîner en faisant le plus de marches possibles. J'ai fait le minuscule PR05 Vinhas da Criação Velha sur l'île de Pico (6,9 km), le GR01 Coast to Coast (36,8 km) et le PRC08 Entre Montes (3,4 km) sur l'île de Faial et le long GR01+GR02 SJO (92 km), la traversée ouest-est de l'île de Sao Jorge.
