EN: There are meetings you expect during decades. This is on of them. On 1 November 1998, Karl Bushby, 29 years old left Punta Arenas in South Chile. He had worked from his 17 years in the army (12 years experience). He named his expedition GOLIATH EXPEDITION.
Very simple : walk home without using any mode of transport : no plane, no boat, no bike, no kayak or rowboat, just his feet and hands to progress.
He now hopes to reach home in Hull, in the UK, on 1 November 2026 after 28 years. He is very close.
He will enter France soon and reach Calais next week. The last major obstacle is to swim the Channel between France and the UK, which is normally not permitted from a short distance. (Calais-Dover).
The major obstacles were:
- Crossing the jungle of the Darien Gap among military and drug traffickers and wild animals.
- Crossing Alaska
- Crossing the Bering strait on skis. He did that with French Dimitri Kieffer. Together they are the last persons to cross the frozen North Atlantic. Of course, when arriving in Russia, they spend over 50 days in detention.
- All the bureaucracy to walk across most of Siberia until reaching and crossing Kazakhstan.
- World first swimming (with 3 other people) across the Caspian Sea (290km) from Kazakhstan to Azerbaïjan.
He entered Europe via Turkey last year and walked across Europe for 90 days then his VISA expired when he reached the Belgian border. He arrived in Belgium last week and resumed walking. We finally met for a burger in Tournai this Friday evening. This morning I helped with translations at the hospital where he did a medical check with a doctor to get a paper claiming he is fit to swim the Channel.
FR: Il y a des rencontres que l'on attend depuis des décennies. Celle-ci en fait partie. Le 1er novembre 1998, Karl Bushby, alors âgé de 29 ans, a quitté Punta Arenas, dans le sud du Chili. Il avait servi dans l'armée depuis l'âge de 17 ans (12 ans d'expérience). Il a baptisé son expédition « GOLIATH EXPEDITION ».
Le principe était très simple : rentrer chez lui à pied sans utiliser aucun moyen de transport : ni avion, ni bateau, ni vélo, ni kayak, ni barque, juste ses pieds et ses mains pour avancer.
Il espère désormais arriver chez lui à Hull, au Royaume-Uni, le 1er novembre 2026, après 28 ans. Il est tout près du but.
Il entrera bientôt en France et atteindra Calais la semaine prochaine. Le dernier obstacle majeur consiste à traverser la Manche à la nage entre la France et le Royaume-Uni, ce qui n’est normalement pas autorisé sur une courte distance (Calais-Douvres).
Les principaux obstacles ont été :
- Traverser la jungle du Darien Gap au milieu des militaires, des trafiquants de drogue et des animaux sauvages.

- Traverser le détroit de Béring à skis. Il l’a fait avec le Français Dimitri Kieffer. Ensemble, ils sont les dernières personnes à avoir traversé l’Atlantique Nord gelé. Bien sûr, à leur arrivée en Russie, ils ont passé plus de 50 jours en détention.
- Toutes les démarches administratives pour traverser à pied la majeure partie de la Sibérie jusqu’à atteindre et traverser le Kazakhstan.
- Première traversée à la nage au monde (avec trois autres personnes) de la mer Caspienne (290 km), du Kazakhstan à l’Azerbaïdjan.
Il est entré en Europe par la Turquie l'année dernière et a traversé l'Europe à pied pendant 90 jours, puis son visa a expiré lorsqu'il a atteint la frontière belge. Il est arrivé en Belgique la semaine dernière et a repris sa marche. Nous nous sommes enfin retrouvés vendredi soir à Tournai pour manger un hamburger. Ce matin, je l'ai aidé à traduire des documents à l'hôpital où il a passé un examen médical auprès d'un médecin afin d'obtenir un certificat attestant qu'il est apte à traverser la Manche à la nage.
