EN: I went to Outdoor by ISPO this year. Last time was in 2019 so first time after the pandemic. I saw wechsel started to make sleeping bags, a few new dehydrated food like TRAIL from Denmark. A swiss company making coffee in tube for the outdoors and had the privilege to speak with Roland Tyson, the founder of SeatoSummit.

FR : Cette année, je me suis rendu à Outdoor by ISPO. La dernière fois, c'était en 2019, donc la première fois après la pandémie. I saw wechsel a commencé à faire des sacs de couchage, quelques nouveaux aliments déshydratés comme TRAIL du Danemark. Henk-Jan Geel guide of De expeditie

EN: I am connected to Henk-Jan Geel since 2014 and we finally met. He is a guide at Arctic Adventure and an an IPGA guide. He did several long crossings of Greenland. Recently he was involved in the real TV show "De Expeditie" screened in Flanders. He was a guide for season one in Greenland and season two in Namibia. Each season is 8 episodes of around 50 minutes. We shared experiences, especially of deserts. Actually the production company had called me a year ago to get ideas on deserts expeditions that could be done. The lady asked me around 2 weeks with no civilisation around. Also cost was a discussion. The Simpson Desert is I think too hard especially for a film crew that would need to film and progress with their own supplies. Death Valley is cheaper but not so remote. They chose a "random" route that I cannot reveal because the show did not air yet.

In season one they had the YouTuber Average Rob, who I've met a few times.

FR : Je suis en contact avec Henk-Jan Geel depuis 2014 et nous nous sommes enfin rencontrés. Il est guide chez Arctic Adventure et guide IPGA. Il a effectué plusieurs longues traversées du Groenland. Récemment, il a participé à l'émission de télévision "De Expeditie" diffusée en Flandre. Il a été guide pour la première saison au Groenland et la deuxième saison en Namibie. Chaque saison comporte 8 épisodes d'environ 50 minutes. Nous avons partagé nos expériences, notamment en ce qui concerne les déserts. En fait, la société de production m'avait appelé il y a un an pour avoir des idées sur les expéditions dans les déserts qui pourraient être réalisées. La dame m'a demandé environ 2 semaines hors civilisation. Le coût a également fait l'objet d'une discussion. Je pense que le désert de Simpson est trop difficile, surtout pour une équipe de tournage qui aurait besoin de filmer et de progresser avec son propre matériel. La Vallée de la Mort est moins chère mais moins éloignée. Ils ont choisi un itinéraire "aléatoire" que je ne peux pas révéler car l'émission n'a pas encore été diffusée. Dans la première saison, il y avait le YouTubeur Average Rob, que j'ai rencontré quelques fois.

Everest Base Camp Chocolate Sherpa expedition

EN: 15 years ago today, a team of 3 Belgians and 3 Sherpas walked from Lukla to arrive at EBC (Everest Base Camp). I actually walked from Kathmandu on the bus road to Jiri (188km) and then trekking from Jiri to Lukla, Lukla to EBC and back to Lukla. I finally imported my GPS coordinates and made the final route, day distances and elevations. We brought 200kg of chocolate that we distributed for free along the way. I hope to do the film on the expedition "Chocolate Sherpa" in the coming years. I was even on Brasilian TV.

FR: Il y a 15 ans aujourd'hui, une équipe composée de 3 Belges et de 3 Sherpas a marché de Lukla jusqu'au camp de base de l'Everest (EBC). En fait, j'ai marché de Katmandou à Jiri (188 km) par la route des bus, puis de Jiri à Lukla, de Lukla à EBC et de Lukla à Lukla. J'ai finalement importé mes coordonnées GPS et établi l'itinéraire final, les distances journalières et les altitudes. Nous avions apporté 200 kg de chocolat que nous avons distribué gratuitement le long du chemin. J'espère faire un film sur l'expédition "Chocolate Sherpa" dans les années à venir. Je suis même passé à la télévision brésilienne.

20 years ago the Working Holiday Visa Australia

EN: 20 years ago I bought my ticket to Sydney Australia. I had been waiting for the WHV (Working Holiday Visa) to come into force, it had been signed by Prince (now King) Philippe in 2002 but it was not there yet. Australia had no embassy in Belgium then, every thing was passing via France. I even wrote to the Foreign Affairs to ask for the status of the WHV. Australia answered after 1 month that it was slow/blocking in Belgium. Belgium replied after 6 months with "What is a working holiday visa"?

With no WHV I took a normal long duration VISA 1-year multiple entry with a max stay of 6 months in a row, which was perfect as I also wanted to travel to New Zealand, Fiji, New Caledonia and Tahiti. I traveled extensively with over 100 dives and close to 2000 km of hikes in 1 year (End June 2004 to End June 2005) and went back to Belgium. That year of travel changed me and inspired me to travel more.

The WHV came into force in November 2004 while I was already in Australia. So I apply early 2006 and went again to Australia for a full year. That year changed again my life again as I did my first 3 expeditions in Australia with the last epic one in Tasmania.

In 20 years the Working Holiday Visa program has an oportunity I would recommend if you want to travel, improve your English, make friends, perhaps find love or a new life Down Under.

My website or my blog is also nearly 20 years old. I've erased all the content prior to June 2005. I've saved it somewhere but I dunno where.

FR : Il y a 20 ans, j'ai acheté mon billet pour Sydney, en Australie. J'attendais que le WHV (Working Holiday Visa) entre en vigueur, il avait été signé par le Prince (aujourd'hui Roi) Philippe en 2002 mais il n'existait pas encore. L'Australie n'avait pas d'ambassade en Belgique à l'époque, tout passait par la France. J'ai même écrit au ministère des affaires étrangères pour demander où en était le WHV. L'Australie m'a répondu au bout d'un mois que le processus était lent/bloqué en Belgique. La Belgique m'a répondu au bout de 6 mois : "Qu'est-ce qu'un visa vacances-travail ?

Sans WHV, j'ai pris un VISA normal de longue durée d'un an à entrées multiples avec un séjour maximum de 6 mois d'affilée, ce qui était parfait car je voulais aussi voyager en Nouvelle-Zélande, aux Fidji, en Nouvelle-Calédonie et à Tahiti. J'ai beaucoup voyagé, avec plus de 100 plongées et près de 2000 km de randonnées en un an (de fin juin 2004 à fin juin 2005) et je suis retourné en Belgique. Cette année de voyage m'a changé et m'a donné envie de voyager davantage.

Le WHV est entré en vigueur en novembre 2004 alors que j'étais déjà en Australie. J'ai donc déposé ma demande début 2006 et je suis repartie en Australie pour une année entière. Cette année-là a de nouveau changé ma vie puisque j'ai effectué mes trois premières expéditions en Australie, dont la dernière, épique, en Tasmanie.

En 20 ans, le programme Working Holiday Visa est une opportunité que je vous recommande si vous voulez voyager, améliorer votre anglais, vous faire des amis, peut-être trouver l'amour ou une nouvelle vie en Australie.

Mon site web ou mon blog a lui aussi près de 20 ans. J'ai effacé tout le contenu antérieur à juin 2005. Je l'ai sauvegardé quelque part, mais je ne sais pas où.

Titanic exhibition

EN: Almost year ago, the Titan submersible was lost in the Atlantic while diving to the Titanic with 5 people inside. Two members of the explorers club were among them including Hamish Harding and Paul-Henri Nargeolet, who was one of the most respected explorer of the Titanic ship wreck. The exhibition I just saw here in Brussels showed some of the thousands of artifacts that have been collected.

FR: Il y a presque un an, le submersible Titan était perdu dans l'Atlantique alors qu'il plongeait vers le Titanic avec 5 personnes à l'intérieur. Deux membres du club des explorateurs en faisaient partie, à savoir Hamish Harding et Paul-Henri Nargeolet, l'un des explorateurs les plus respectés de l'épave du Titanic. L'exposition que je viens de voir ici à Bruxelles présentait quelques-uns des milliers d'artefacts qui ont été collectés.

Odyssee Orient en 4L

EN: I attended the screening of the film Odyssée Orient that retraces the journey of 3 young guys who wanted to see the world especially after the pandemic. They wanted to drive from Belgium to Cambodia with an old Renault 4L but everything didn't go as planned.

FR: J'ai assisté à la projection du film Odyssée Orient qui retrace le voyage de 3 jeunes qui voulaient voir le monde surtout après la pandémie. Ils voulaient aller de la Belgique au Cambodge avec une vieille Renault 4L mais tout ne s'est pas passé comme prévu.

Explorers Club in Monaco

 

EN: During 2 days, I was at a conference organised by The Explorers Club and the Yacht Club Monaco (YCM). I reconnected with a few explorers friends, made some new ones. It was also during the Ocean's week of Monaco. We were 4 Belgians (top left photo). I could finally have a chat with Victor Vescovo who also gave his debrief about the Titan submarine implosion. There were many talks on day 2 including Kathy Sullivan, explorers-divers Emmanuelle Périé and Ghislain Bardout from Under the Pole expeditions, Bertrand Piccard's 25 years anniversary of circumnavigating the world by balloon.

During the YCM Explorer Awards, adventurer Mike Horn and Prince Albert were also present.

FR: Pendant deux jours, j'ai assisté à une conférence organisée par The Explorers Club et le Yacht Club Monaco (YCM). J'ai repris contact avec quelques amis explorateurs et je me suis fait de nouveaux amis. C'était aussi pendant la semaine de l'océan à Monaco. Nous étions 4 Belges (photo en haut à gauche). J'ai enfin pu discuter avec Victor Vescovo qui a également donné son compte-rendu sur l'implosion du sous-marin Titan. Il y a eu de nombreuses conférences le deuxième jour, notamment avec Kathy Sullivan, les explorateurs-plongeurs Emmanuelle Périé et Ghislain Bardout des expéditions Under the Pole, le 25e anniversaire du tour du monde en ballon de Bertrand Piccard. Lors de la remise des YCM Explorer Awards, l'aventurier Mike Horn et le Prince Albert étaient également présents.

Inside a Triton submersible

   

EN: In Monaco, during the Ocean Week, I had the chance to go inside a Triton submarine. Perhaps one day i can do a dive. After all, scuba diving and the underwater world was my first passion before exploring and expeditions.

FR: À Monaco, lors de la Semaine de l'océan, j'ai eu la chance de pénétrer à l'intérieur d'un sous-marin Triton. Peut-être qu'un jour je pourrai faire une plongée. Après tout, la plongée sous-marine et le monde sous-marin ont été ma première passion avant l'exploration et les expéditions.

 

Forest in one day treeplanting

 
EN: I the past 4 months I went to 2 tree planting events organised by the Jane Goodall Institute Belgium and Luminus. On 26 Nov 2023 I planted 55 trees. The ground was not the best and there was also a big slope that didn't make it easy to stand in the mud under the rain. Today I was injured at my shoulder from last week but the digging movement was working without much pain and I've stopped after 20 trees to be sure to avoid any further injury. Still this is not much for the pollution we do make but it's already something. Also with the action more trees are planted in Africa on top of the reforestation efforts in Belgium.

FR: Au cours des quatre derniers mois, j'ai participé à deux événements de plantation d'arbres organisés par l'Institut Jane Goodall Belgique et Luminus. Le 26 novembre 2023, j'ai planté 55 arbres. Le terrain n'était pas le meilleur et il y avait aussi une grande pente qui ne rendait pas facile de se tenir debout dans la boue sous la pluie. Aujourd'hui, je me suis blessé à l'épaule depuis la semaine dernière, mais le mouvement de creusement a fonctionné sans trop de douleur et je me suis arrêté après 20 arbres pour être sûr d'éviter toute autre blessure. Ce n'est pas beaucoup pour la pollution que nous faisons, mais c'est déjà quelque chose. Cette action permet également de planter des arbres en Afrique, en plus des efforts de reboisement en Belgique. 

Francois D'Haene Le chemin du Retour

 

EN: I went in Uccle to see the new film of François D'Haene Le Chemin du Retour. He remembered me from our last meeting almost 2 years ago. Well he was impressed to hear I had walked up and down the Montagne de Bueren 135 times. We went after to have a pizza.

FR: Je suis allé à Uccle voir le nouveau film de François D'Haene Le Chemin du Retour. Il se souvenait de moi depuis notre dernière rencontre il y a presque 2 ans. Il était impressionné d'apprendre que j'avais monté et descendu la Montagne de Bueren 135 fois. Nous sommes ensuite allés manger une pizza.
